Just went out on a PR lunch with an editor from one of Conde’s publications. The editor said that Conde was on a complete hiring freeze. No one is hiring from any of the the mags.
Just an FYI and maybe try Hearst for those of you looking for a mag job.

Anyone know what mags at Conde are hiring? I’ve applied EVERYWHERE and I’m having no luck!

None of them are hiring, which is probably why you’ve had no luck. Most of the permalance positions people were talking about a few weeks ago have dried up as well. If it were me, I’d find something to tide me over until 2009, instead of waiting for the long shot when someone vital quits and needs to be replaced immediately (i.e the edit assist. position at Hearst posted on mediabistro yesterday)

look at the economy…and everything is becoming virtual, they just need how to make their readers visit the site which is a hard thing to do since people want the tangible.

The hiring freeze is definite, and was announced to the company yesterday. No one at any magazine is hiring anyone, despite the fact that they may have hired someone a week ago (we had a new hire start on Monday, just before the hiring freeze was instated).
I also heard from a Conde
I also heard from a Conde Nast editor that they were very recently put on a hiring freeze. But since other people are saying there isn’t, maybe it’s different for each magazine and editors are still hiring for jobs that are absolutely necessary.

Conde could be waiting until the new fiscal year, aka, 2009, to fill these open positions. That’s been known to happen.

I'm just repeating what i've heard
I don’t actually work at conde but i met with 2 editors and both told me they lost their assistants and weren’t allowed to hire anyone new b/c of the freeze. Maybe your mag maybe the exception but two different editors at 2 different Conde magazines said they weren’t allowed to replace positions b/c of the freeze.

conde doesn’t have a hiring freeze. we just hired 2 new eds at my mag this month and i know of 2 other open positions at other mags. they even created a new position at my mag last week.

I know Time is also on a hiring freeze. I thought Hearst was as well.
