ASME Internship

Hey Edsters! I’m working on my application for the ASME internship, and it seems deceptively simple. Have any of you gone through the internship? Any tips on writing the cover letter/filling out the application form? What do they really want?

Thanks!

notice

Last year’s app said you would find out on or before February 15, a Friday. We got our notice on Valentine’s Day. IT WAS AWESOME.

Yay ASME!

I was an ASME intern last summer, and it is an incredible program. The application really is as simple as it seems. For your cover letter, (and this could go for pretty much any cover letter), I think it’s a really good idea to be as specific as possible. What have you done in past internships, and how is that going to make the best ASME intern ever? They want people that they can send to major publications who aren’t going to embarrass them, so your letter should show that you’ve had internships in the past and rocked them.

It’s also never a bad idea to (SUBTLY) suck up a little. This is a really great opportunity, so tell them why you’re perfect for each other.

Hope that helps! Good luck!

Chances

What do you think the chances are of getting an ASME spot if you’ve never had a past internship?

Depends!

I was an ASME intern in 2003, and there were many people in my program who never had a magazine internship before. They did, however, have amazing on-campus publication experience— we’re talking top editors at award-winning daily student newspapers. I’m not sure what the application is like now, but if you can prove that you’re genuinely interested in magazines and you’re a talented editor, having previous journalism experience of any kind may be all you need to get in. (Being male can’t hurt, either)

Do you remember

Do you remember how long it took to hear back from the people at MPA? I know we’re supposed to know before mid-February, but did you get notified sooner since you got a spot?

Valentine's Day

I remember getting an e-mail on February 14th, then a letter in the mail a few days later.
