Hi all,
I am currently a Journalism major at a four year university, but I am thinking of changing my major to Professional Writing.
The Professional Writing major would apply all of my journalism credits, yet would allow me take take a broader array of writing classes - including creative writing workshops.
Can I still get a job, and a career, in the magazine/newspaper industry without a J degree?
I would appreciate any feedback possible :) Thanks!!!

Some say degree doesn't matter
And to a certain extent it doesn’t. I majored in international relations because my school didn’t have a journalism major, but did a minor in professional writing.
After college I landed a paid internship with a magazine that eventually hired me. After working for the magazine for several months I learned I wouldn’t have been asked to interview for the internship if I didn’t have the prof. writing minor.
Some companies only look for j-schoolers, but most will accept someone with a related degree.
Yeah, your interning
Yeah, your interning experience matters more than the classes you took. And besides, are you not allowed to take creative writing classes just as electives?
Your degree doesn’t
Your degree doesn’t matter. Your experience does.
And the sooner...
you realize that, the better!
Let me tell you this as a still unemployed ‘07 college graduate with a double major in Journalism and Creative Writing…once you walk across that stage, nobody gives a hoot about your college degree. My advice to you is to INTERN, INTERN, INTERN. Major in whatever your little heart desires, but focus on getting as much real, professional experience as you possibly can if you want to even think about succeeding in this industry.
