trouble closing the deal

I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but obviously I’m not doing something right. Lately I’ve been on a bunch of interviews, yet I can never close the deal. Not a call back, not anything. It seems as though I’m getting great feedback. I’m upbeat, and I answer the questions well enough. I feel prepared. But, sigh. What am I doing wrong? Employers, what do you look for?

I hear you. Sometimes when you send many resumes & don’t get any responses, you feel like, what does it take to land a job? You really want to curse the world at times. You want to tell the interviewer, please hire me or you will be missing out on a great worker.

I know this sounds redundant, but keep sending resumes & going on interviews. Someone will see potential in you & offer you a job. Do what you need to do & take each interview as an experience lesson.

Have you tried emailing or calling the places where you applied to? Sometimes, places want the job seeker to follow up on their own accord. If you do this, it proves that you are more than interested in the job & you are diligent. I wish you luck & keep us posted when you land a job. Just don’t throw in the towel!

well, it really depends on

well, it really depends on the job and the hiring manager, but for an entry level position i look for:

someone who has had internships at similar mags (if i work at elle, they should have interned at instyle, glamour, lucky, etc) this sounds picky, but there are usually people out there who have.

i don’t necessarily want someone who has had another entry level job at another mag since that means they are kind of over it and ready for an asst ed job, so that can count against people depending on what say is there reason for leaving. if they were laid off, it’s ok.

someone who is excited and seems organized and ready to dive in. (i have met with people who seem overly confident which is a huge problem. it’s ok to be a little intimidated. it’s human.)

and the really important one is someone who seems like they will fit in and be a good co-worker. so much of hiring for entry level is personality and how they present themselves. we want to work with people who are like us and seem fun.
