time inc. question/what 2009 internships are you applying for?

has anyone ever applied for more than one type (editorial/photo/design) of the time inc. internship? i’d prefer editorial, but i have some experience in photo and design, too, and if i could improve my chances by applying to more than one, i’d like to.

for anyone who enjoys more than one aspect of journalism: have you applied for various positions in editorial, photo, etc.? i’m assuming editorial would be the most competitive.

and for those of you who are preparing for a summer 2009 internship: where are you applying?! how (un)prepared are you? i’m nervous to get started on applications… but very, very excited.

You can...

but I wouldn’t. You don’t say how old you are, or how many other internships you’ve had, but if you’re a college student and have interned before, you should be applying for internships in the department in which you eventually want to work. If you REALLY don’t know and feel you need to intern around and find out, then try and do academic year internships or something, but if you just have multiple interests, I’m sorry to tell you that most likely, no one hiring you in the future is particularly going to care about that. If I need to hire someone for an editorial position, I’d rather hire the girl who worked really hard in edit at Podunk USA Weekly than the girl who had a photo internship at Time Inc. but decided it wasn’t for her and now thinks she might want to be in edit.

Improving your chances of getting an internship with a big company is meaningless if the internship doesn’t improve your chances of getting the job you want.
