For all you online/web editors or interns out there—
How did you pick up the skills you need to work in the online sector of the magazine industry? I feel like the web is one part of magazines that’s growing rather than dying, and I would really like to gain web experience.
I’m wondering if it would be worth it to invest in an HTML/photoshop/web editing class or just to somehow teach these things to myself, through a book or website? Any suggestions? Thanks—I’d appreciate any input!

There are free tutorials all over the web for HTML, CMS and most web/blogging tools. Many of the CMS systems and blogging tools have the same platforms and similiar protocols. It’s very easy to learn a variety of different tools in short amount of time.
As another poster mentioned, many blogging sites have a free tutorial, so you may want to create a blog just to learn the various tools and options.
Everything I know about web publishing, I’ve taught myself. You can do this, it’s easy!!

Interning
Yes, interning is the best way because different companies use different programs to update their sites. They are essentially the same but have different components, so a class won’t help, you just need to do it.
ALSO, it’s really easy to do. The programs, known as Content Management Systems, are really easy and editor friendly. Its sort of like updating a myspace page or facebook page where you just write text in the right box.

I don’t think that you need a class. You could make your own blog or website very easily, and there’s a TON of tutorials online. Check out Freewebs, Blogger, Wordpress, Tumblr, Livejournal, and a hundred other sites for starters.
And like JenFromJersey said, if you’re hired as a web intern, they usually teach you the basics, like web editing and some basic HTML design stuff. They know you’re an intern that obviously won’t know as much as the web editor.

I’m on my second web internship at a magazine, and as much as it sucks not being paid, I’ve learned a TON about writing and editing for the web, blogging, and probably most importantly, I’ve learned about the technical side of things - how to build pages, upload content, etc.
I came in to my first web internship knowing absolutely nothing, and they WILL teach/train you…if they’re hiring an intern, then they probably really do need the help.

If you’re considering internships, try to intern at a magazine website. If you already do work at a magazine, try to pitch in at the website. A simple way to learn is also to just start a blog at Wordpress or Blogger.

I also interned at a website and it was really easy to learn web publishing. HTML is not difficult once you get the hang of it. I don’t know if a class would be a necessity, but my guess is it doesn’t hurt. I’ve heard of people buying books on how to use stuff like HTML and content management systems though, and apparently those are pretty decent.
