Marketing jobs just as hard to find! Help!

I have never had an interest in writing/editorial, however my interest in working at a magazine has led me to Ed2010. Instead, I have a degree in Marketing, and I have been looking for a job in the marketing field at a publication. Even with two marketing internships under my belt at two publications, I still find myself jobless.

At most big companies like Conde or Hearst you have to start out as a Sales Assistant, which is unfortunate since sales generally has nothing to do with marketing (unless you fluff it!). I’m willing to pay my dues, but I’m finding my marketing experience doesn’t translate well for a sales position. It’s a catch 22, really.

My question: Does anybody here have a marketing job at a publication? How did you go about obtaining it? What was your experience? And most importantly, do you enjoy it?

Thanks!

Marketing job w/editorial experience

Hey Mark21,

That’s a great question. I’m facing the same dilemma. ***Curious8: Would you elaborate on how you sold yourself as a person who could do marketing with an editorial background?

I just graduated from college, but I’ve already had two editorial assistant jobs - one being full-time at a niche national magazine. However, in the past year, I decided that I want to pursue sales and marketing (mainly marketing). Since then I’ve done two marketing-related internships, but it seems that HR people/hiring managers look at my resume and automatically pigeonhole me as only a writer.

Living every day to the fullest

Yep!

I do Marketing for a B2B pub. Prior to my job, I just had editorial magazine internships. I took that experience to my interview and somehow I got the job. Some key skills they liked: copywriting, deadline-driven, knowing the basics of how a magazine is run. I LOVE MARKETING! During my my editorial internships, I realized trying to write every day and add a creative spin on all my articles was beginning to be a struggle for myself. BUT I still loved magazines. When you do marketing for a (trade) magazine you work with the sales department for selling tactics and the advertising department for different promos - web and print- Ultimate goal: branding your publication successfully!

It’s the best decision I’ve made! And I’ve gotten some great projects to add to my portfolio (promos, ads, media kits).

I’m not sure if it’s the same at a consumer pub…can anyone offer advice?
