Hoping to commiserate…have been looking for a paid editorial gig for over a year to no avail and it is seriously starting to wear on me. I am growing increasingly depressed and hopeless. I am 30 and far too old to still be doing unpaid internships, but it seems to be my fate at this point. Anyway, just needed to unload I suppose.

Don't Give Up
Don’t be feel ashamed to unload, that is what this message board is here for. I felt the exact same way you did this past summer. Because I didn’t have much work experience, especially in the magazine business, I applied for internships & freelance positions. After not hearing anything for a while, I felt like crying & questioning myself: is this really for me b/c it is frustrating. But eventually, something did come my way.
30 is not old. There are people in their 40s & 50’s who decide they want to change careers because they found a new calling.
Have you tried freelancing or pitching stories to editors. What type of genre do you write in/ looking for? Another thing that might help is if you know people or have friends in the writing business, maybe they can help you get your foot in the door. Ask them out to lunch & talk things over. Even if you have to support yourself working at store or in an office, while you write on the side, don’t be embarassed to do so. Many writers so that.
You may not think so now, but something will pop up for you when you least expect it. I hope this helps. Best of luck!
It will happen!
Lots of people are living proof, including me! I’m a December 06 graduate and interned until I got my first EA job in Sept. 07. I got laid off in May of this year and I was devastated. Even though I’m clearly qualified, I did not go on interviews for weeks at a time all throughout the summer. I was getting really desperate and decided to take a full-time (very minimally paid) magazine internship. Let me just say that going from an EA to an intern was a very humbling experience, especially when I was running errands and being bossed around by EA’s my age (and younger). I’m still at my internship but just got two job offers last week (one of them is a dream opportunity that I thought would never happen) and I am waiting to hear back from a couple of other places.
It will happen when you least expect it. It’s a full-time job just looking for a job!
