In my experience, the industry is much more “closed door” than it is in the U.S. Even with experience, I had trouble finding a magazine internship in London. If you’re interested in the UK, a lot of the magazines list the proper people to contact for a work experience placement under their HR page. Check out NatMags (http://www.natmags.co.uk/index.php/v1/Work_Experience_Opportunities). You also might want to try related industries, like PR.

Also, for a shameless plug, if you’re interested in summer study abroad there was a program I did last summer that was absolutely perfect for journalism. It’s in this really small town in Italy called Cagli [no one speaks English!], and it is basically a multimedia bootcamp. You find a story, use a translator to interview subjects, and create a web documentary complete with photography and videography classes. I would really, really recommend it if you want to study abroad without sacrificing important journalism experience. Here’s the link: http://www.ieimedia.com/cagliproject.html

Good luck with everything!
