Informational Interview/Portfolio

I have an informational interview coming up at Hearst and I had a few questions. I know I need to have questions prepared for the HR person and I should obviously have some knowledge about Heart’s magazines, but what else should I come prepared with?

What does everyone else use as far as a portfolio - print-outs of their work in a manila folder or copies pasted to black construction paper and made pretty a la The Devil Wears Prada? How many clips do you put in your portfolio? Basically I know nothing about how to put together one since I’ve been emailing stuff so far.

Any help would be awesome - this is the first breakthrough I’ve made since I moved up here a few months ago, so I’m pretty excited!

I buy the Itoya portfolios

I buy the Itoya portfolios (http://www.dickblick.com/zz150/19/) which aren’t heartbreakingly expensive if someone wants to hang onto them, and I cut and scan all of my clips into my computer and then print them out in color so that they’ll all be on uniform pages with no tape involved/corners sticking up, and so that I can easily print out an extra set if I need to redo my book. Plus then you have the files all ready to send as attachments if someone wants you to send them via email. Portfolios are professional tools, and I like that mine looks clean and simple, without that art-project feel. Definitely don’t use a manila folder, you want to put in more effort than that, but you don’t need to go scrapbook the entirety of your writing life.

My portfolio is a big black

My portfolio is a big black leather scrapbook. The pages are black with a plastic cover over each one (like a photo album). I pasted my actual articles to the black paper using double sided tape. It took forever! I put as many clips as I could fit into the portfolio, there are 20 pages and some of those are the covers of the magazines I have written for. So around 10-15 clips. I need to add more pages though to update. The more professional it is, the better. I would not recommend manila. I’ve received a lot of compliments about my portfolio on interviews, so I hope I’ve helped! Take your portfolio, resume (i usually put it in a padfolio which is a leather folder with a notepad and pocket built in). Dress as if you are going on an interview. Congrats on your informational! It’s even difficult to get those these days!

I have a couple

I have a couple informationals with editors coming up—I haven’t prepared an official portfolio like that because what if they want to keep them? I much rather hand over my clips in a plain folder so they can read them. To get the informationals, I cold-emailed several editors from over a dozen magazines and told them why I like their magazine and asked for an informational.

Oh wow!

That actually worked? I’ve emailed a couple of editors and only one responded that she’ll keep my resume on file. I’m so happy for you though!

yeah, i’ll probably just

yeah, i’ll probably just get a scrapbook or something along the lines like you have. thanks for the advice - i really appreciate it!

I’m sorry…I’ve never

I’m sorry…I’ve never had an informational…so I can’t offer advice. But how do you get one of these…do you just call HR and ask? I know it seems like a silly question…but I’ve only heard of these on this website

yeah, i basically just cold

yeah, i basically just cold call hr departments. this is like my fifth try with hearst. i just kept calling and this one lady finally asked me to come in for something. i hate being so pushy, but persistence really does pay off in this field.

It's not that easy.

Unfortunately.
