I just graduated from college last May. I did not have much work/writing experience. For me, I look on Craigslist under the jobs: writing/editing category & gigs: writing. I managed to get an art writing freelance job. Be very wary. Make sure the places you are writing for are legit. And if you look on Craigslist, don’t just limit yourself to the area you live in. Major cities from all over the world look for freelance writers. Who knows, if they like your work that you submit, they might offer you more work or they might know someone.
I also look under http://quarterlife.com/internships. Even though the listings are internships, it does not hurt to look there if you want more experience. I am interning now, but I also freelance on the side when I have time. When you go for future job interviews, interviewers are really pleased to see you have your work published. It does not matter if you had your work published a couple of yrs. ago or 1 month ago. Also visit your favorite magazine websites or flip through the pages & contact editors to ask if they offer freelance postions & what they expect.
Freelance does not pay a lot, it would be wise to have a side job that will support you financially or if you are fortunate enough to have a supportive family behind you. But it is a great way to get your writing out in the world & build your resume. May I ask what writing genres you are interested in b/c I am interested in art/food/travel/culture. Congradulations as a soon-to-be college graduate!!!!!!!!
