Hi, I’m trying to land a art/design internship at a magazine this summer, or spring if that would be less competition… is there anybody on here that’s gotten one and has advice? My main interests are to get one at Time, Inc., Seventeen, or Rodale.. anybody have art internships with these companies before?

You should check out the
You should check out the Society of Publication Designers (www.spd.org) … they have an awesome new website with tons of great blogs that’ll give you great insight into magazine design. There’s even this one blog called The Process where the WIRED magazine art director is explaining the whole background behind one of their stories … it’ll give you SO much information about what’s involved. So read up on that. Also, they have a lot of student events, so consider attending those if you can. (www.spd.org/student-outreach)
Otherwise, I agree with the other poster … you should show that you love design in magazines specifically. All the other forms of graphic design are great, but editorial design is its own thing. So read up on it (amazon has tons of great books if you do a search for “publication design”) and show that you want to design magazines and not just any old thing.
SPD's next Pub Crawl
http://www.spd.org/student-outreach/
The Pub Crawl for tomorrow is closed but per their website, the next one is Thursday, October 30, at 7pm (more info TK next week).
This seems like a great idea. You get to take tours of magazine art departments and see what the vibe is like. Sounds cool.

When we look for design interns...
they should have a strong interest in magazines and know the basic structure of them (ie. know what FOB/BOB depts are, know what “the well” is), have a working knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop (we have our interns design some of our templated FOB pages as well as make clipping paths in Photoshop for all the silos in the issue), and be eager and willing to do everything.
Also remember that there’s nothing more annoying than an intern that plays crossword puzzles or is on Facebook all day and doesn’t ask if there’s anything for her/him to do! Even if there’s actually nothing to do, FIND something to do (ie organize the supply cabinet, fill the paper trays of the printers, rearrange the magazine files, etc). Have a very positive attitude and to reiterate, be eager and be willing to do everything!
Hope that helps.
Good advice...
but I have another question. I have a very good knowledge of magazines, familiarity with indesign and photoshop, but I don’t have AMAZING design clips (but I have created a magazine prototype before). How much is that for qualification? I want to apply for mostly editorial internships, but design is something I’m interested in, too.
still OK
We had this design intern whose design portfolio wasn’t so strong when he interviewed with us (and he didn’t even know InDesign!). BUT he was talented nonetheless. He worked hard and proved himself time and time again. He got to work on a lot of FOB stories where he learned the basics of editorial design and built his portfolio with those stories. He eventually got hired right before he graduated college at a great publication and the rest is history!
So NO, you don’t necessarily have to have an “amazing” portfolio. Us art directors KNOW that you’re still in school and learning. And like the other poster said, editorial design is it’s own thing. Unless you take an editorial design class, most of the pieces in your book will reflect work from your foundation year, graphic design classes, etc. and not specifically “editorial design”.
If you have a strong foundation in design and have a good eye of what “looks good on a page”, you’ll be able to transition into editorial design pretty easily.
Good luck with your internship/job search!
BTW: SVA offers this great class that I know people have taken and have gotten jobs right after they’ve taken it!

In this course, you will create your own magazine (newspaper, book or zine) from concept to final, bound product. You will refine your knowledge of how to package editorial material in a graphic style that represents your personal aesthetic. Weekly critiques will consider every element of each page until a cohesive product is achieved that both suits the content of the magazine and appeals to the target audience. Students will create covers, logos, a contents page, a feature well and department pages. Typography, layout, illustration, photography, grids, rubrics, white space, etc., will all become familiar elements in your editorial design vocabulary. We will visit several major magazines and speak with art directors who will share their insights on how they successfully communicate the message of their publication. PREREQUISITE: A working knowledge of Adobe InDesign.
