I’m a post-grad intern and I’m wondering how couth/ethical it is to apply to jobs (especially within the same company) while interning — specifically during the first month. I just started an internship that lasts until December and I don’t want it to look bad if I suddenly quit in October or November. What do you guys think? Have you had to deal w/ the same issue?

Is this a paid internship? I was in a similar situation a couple weeks ago and my editor did mind. You should talk to your editor about his/her expectations for the duration of your internship. Most likely, if you’re not being paid, they wouldn’t mind if you found an actual paying job. They know you have to eat.
It’s unpaid but the sticky
It’s unpaid but the sticky situation is it’s within the same company. So that might be weird…
I'm a post-grad intern, too...
And I think it’s ridiculous to think that your supervisor or wherever you’re interning would fault you for continuing to search for jobs. The fact of the matter is that we’re all ultimately looking for a paid gig…working for free sucks, and clearly it’s nobody’s first choice.
I’ve been very honest and up front with the editors at the magazines/websites I’ve been interning for, and they totally and completely understand that I am continuing to job search while I’m there. In fact, many of them have coached me on my interview skills, given me critiques on my portfolio, and offered their advice and insight about companies I’m interviewing with.
It’s probably not a good idea to job hunt while you’re at your internship, but I’d be lying if I said I haven’t done it. There just aren’t enough hours in the day…
I don’t think anyone will
I don’t think anyone will fault you for wanting to earn money instead of working for free (assuming that’s what you’re doing). Just don’t let it interfere with your internship duties. And please DON’T do it while you’re at your internship.
