How much of a longshot is it to apply for a fall internship at an NYC mag if you don’t actually live in NYC (but are willing to commute 2 days out of the week?)
It’s reassuring to see that several other people have commutes that are around 2 hours! Where are you all coming from? I’m based in the Philadelphia area.
In response to your question, it is not too much of a long shot to apply for an internship. I received almost 10 interview requests even though I have a PA address. Yes, I’m not gonna lie…the commute at times can be hellish, but it’s worth it. Will this be your first time applying for an NYC internship? I’m starting my second NYC internship this fall and getting interviews and responses has been so much easier now that I’ve got one NYC internship under my belt….I’m still in shock over what a difference just one NYC internship has made in getting more responses to my resume.
I did a winter internship at a top teen mag for almost 5 months, and commuted 2 hours each way! It’s definitely not impossible—you just have to stress in your coverletter and interview that the commute won’t interfere with getting your work done (arriving to work on time, having to work late when necessary, etc).
Hi, Pink! Thanks for the response! My commute might be more than that, but I’d be willing to do it nonetheless. I have a relative in the city, and I’m sure she’d let me stay with her two or three days out of the week.
Quick question: How many days did you work at the mag? Was it worth it?
Also, would it be better to if I list my relative’s address on my resume (just to get a leg up?), or just stick to my current one and strongly emphasize the no-interference thing, like you suggested?
As long as you know you will be able to show up on time and do your work, I’d put the relative’s address on the resume. You don’t want to give them any reason to toss your resume before you even get an interview. Just curious, where do you actually live?

It's possible!
