Lately I’ve heard a lot about getting different kinds of internships and the importance of diversifying what you do, for experience’s sake and even just for one’s own personal growth. Also, I feel like that being interested in magazines means that you are not only interested in writing and editing, but the specific content itself, so opportunities to do things other than mag internships may be a draw.
So, just out of curiousity, what else everyone else done? Maybe something related to the media world or not, maybe something you did just to explore a little?

I did a little bit of everything, by accident...
I interned at a television station for four summers straight back home (in different departments), which helped me get experience in sales, advertising, community affairs, news and online. I then did an online internship, several magazine internships, worked for the school newspaper, and did some broadcast work. Did it help me in landing my first magazine job? Nope, I doubt it. But, it did help me learn about media in general, which has helped me determine specifically what I want to do, and it’s also probably given editors and excuse to give me more work.

I’ve just done the newspaper thing (because jobs are so much easier to get—or, they WERE. I don’t know about that these days!). I worked at three newspapers before I moved back into magazines. And since I work at a city mag, working at my local newspaper actually increased my expertise.
