I was reading the resume tips on ed2010 (http://www.ed2010.com/2008/07/tips-writing-resume-right-way - a great help!) but have some questions that it prompted.
1) Is it really that bad to use colors on a resume? I made my name and section heads navy blue, and I don’t mind it. I was wondering if anyone else does it that way, too.
2) I feel weird about not putting education up top, as suggested by the article. I understand that it’s not as important if I’m still a student, but it’s such a tiny section - doesn’t it look squished toward the bottom?!
3) What “skills” do you all have on your resumes? I put practically every program I know (but, they’re relevant ones like photoshop, indesign, incopy, file maker pro, etc…), and I put that I have reporting/copy editing experience (though this is obvious because of my experience section, and I’m contemplating taking it out). What do you all list?
Thanks in advance!

Freelance Experienec
Would you put freelance experience at the top or bottom of your resume? It’s the most recent relevant experience, but is the category most relevant?
Just to clarify, for
Just to clarify, for freelance experience are you talking writing assignments or a freelance position? If it was a freelance position, I’d put it at the top, but if it was a freelance assignment, I’d put it at the bottom, ie: freelance articles published in Glamour, Marie Claire, etc … does that make sense?
freelance experience
I’ve had freelance positions, as in I have freelanced for them semi-often for a year+.
I just put all of my experience in chronological order, which kind of works to my advantage anyway: most recent is my campus paper experience, which I have a lot of, then my super long current magazine internship, then some freelance positions, etc.
my thoughts
I think navy is fine, but remember it’s all going to be printed out in black and white anyway. Personally, I think colors may just look fussy and non-professional. Simpler is better.
I think it’s true that they want to see relevant experience at the top of your resume. Right now, I’m a mid-level editor and my education is just one line. I don’t put my GPA, just my school, year of graduation, and major.
I don’t put any skills at this point. Since I’m working at a magazine, they’d know that I know how to use the basics. Unless you’re applying for something design/production oriented, I think that’s a throwaway line. I do have a line that says “Freelance writing” and then I saw “features in TK magazine, TK magazine, TK magazine, personal essays in TK and TK.”
