No clips from internship! Help!

Here’s the deal: I donn’t have any clips from my internship. I’m new to this whole thing, really. I interned at a magazine that didn’t feature a lot of articles at ALL so there were never times where I was asked for help (the only thing I really did was write blogs for the magazine, file, mail things for them.. not much interesting stuff). So, now I’m afraid that I failed to get any clips!

This was my first internship… I applied to others for this upcoming fall and got many more callbacks this time around than before not having any internship experience at all. But now I’m forced to take a job offer [something unrelated to journalism] instead of an internship b/c I am REALLY tight on money. Also, I’m graduating in May. So, is it going to be harder for me to get a job after I graduate? I wanted an internship so bad, but financially, it just won’t be possible. ALSO, can I use my Myspace blogs as clips? Thanks- any feedback would be nice!! :)

this won't make you feel any better, BUT...

you could do several internships, have a giant portfolio stuffed with clips, and still not be able to find a job after graduation (ahem, like ME). the competition is ROUGH. if i were you, i’d try to get some freelance clips or, really, ANY clips at all. do whatever you can to get published amd, most importantly, make contacts within the industry. that’s what it’s all about!

and, no, i personally would NEVER use myspace blogs as clips…a blog on something like blogger.com that was well-written and not just a series of diary-like posts, MAYBE. but NEVER myspace.

Freelance. Even do it for

Freelance. Even do it for free for awhile. And sometimes to land your first freelance gig, you have to write a couple of on spec pieces and pitches just to demonstrate what you can do. As they say, fake it til you make it. But if you land the right gigs, you can quickly accumulate a lot of clips, which is essential.
