So I’m a male majoring in magazine journalism in Chicago. After recently working on my resume, I’ve determined that since starting college, I’ve held 10 internships (I’m including freelance work in this count). Now, seeing as how most people on Ed—from my estimation—are women, competition to enter the fashion world is stiff.
So what’s a fella to do? I have more experience than I know what to do with, and try as I may to shake off the existential angst of my 20s, I’m worse off than before. Anyone with tips on getting into fashion (men’s or women’s)?
My ideal magazines: Men’s Vogue, GQ, Esquire, Details, Nylon Men’s, Nylon etc. Basically, the big names. I currently intern at Men’s Book here in Chicago, and I love it, but I want to parlay my regional magazine experience into national work. Eventually, I want to emigrate to Europe (who doesn’t?). What would be the best course of action?
Graduation is coming up, and I know I’m not alone in saying that I’m scared for my life.

As long as you know your shit, you’ll be able to land a job no matter what your sex is. Since you want to emigrate to Europe, find a gig with a mag that has a sister publication in a language that you are fluent in and work your way up. If you’re lucky, eventually there may be an opening in that sister publication that is either equivalent to your US job or the natural next step up and you may be able to request a transfer (it’ll work in your favor that you’re already extremely familiar with the general layout and the basic goal of said mag).
Hey
Hey,
It sounds like you have good experience, but if you want into the major fashion magazines your going to have to hear it like the rest of us and that is to head into New York and work on getting interviews and networking. In the end most people say it is worth it. Also you can check and see if they have any regional bureaus in Chicago
