There are, of course, no openings, so I’m not applying for anything specific. What typically happens during these meetings? Is it sort of casual, “getting to know you” type stuff, or do I need to be sweatin’ right now?
Also, how should I present my clips? I have a portfolio that I’ve taken with me to interviews…the editor looks at it, and gives it back. Do I need to create something for them to KEEP, or is that portfolio fine to bring?

also your question about whether or not to give them a portfolio to keep is totally up to you. if you can, that’s good, but it’s not necessary for them to keep it, as long as you bring it and show it to them.
informational interviews are
informational interviews are all about showcasing who you are, what you’ve done, and what you’re interested in within a short time span (the interviews usually don’t last for more than 30 min or so, but could be even shorter) so do come prepared. it helps to bring your portfolio so that you and whoever is interviewing you (whether it be an editor or HR person) can look through it together. as you go through the portfolio maybe you can pick out one or two of the articles and expound on them a bit. Ex)…what was your role? what did you do specifically? did you pitch the idea or was it assigned? did you find your own sources? what were your duties at the internship?, etc. etc.
also come prepared with questions for the interviewer because you need to show interest in the company/magazine. if you are meeting with an HR rep, be sure to let them know what magazines at the house you are interested in and why. Also be specific about what you are interested in. Is it fashion? strictly editorial? research? copy editing? art? new media?
you want to make yourself memorable as well, so anything you’ve done whether it was in college, post-grad, etc. matters. if it somehow relates to magazines, mention it so you can stand out. For instance if you did a semester abroad in college and maintained a blog, that’s information you should share, especially if you are interested in the web.
while informational interviews aren’t job interviews, you should approach them as if they are. you never know! you could make a good impression and then a week later later find out from the interviewer that a position you are qualified for has opened up.
two of the most important things I’d keep in mind besides from being prepared is to let your personality shine through in your interview and follow up with your interviewer (don’t just send a thank you card, and that’s it. stay in touch!!)
