Hello, friends!
Here’s my big dilemma— I recently graduated with an M.A. in English Lit and am currently struggling through the ever-humbling, discouraging, and depressing first job search. It seems like the more blogs, columns, and testimonials I read, the more humbled, discouraged, and depressed I get. The source of all these insecurities seems to lie in my lack of a) viable work experience (I worked at a bookstore throughout college…primarily for the 40% discount on books) b) lack of a “fancy” NYC internship at a big-name mag. I did one internship two years ago at a PR firm in Hamburg, Germany. Of course, as they say, hindsight is 20-20, and I probably should have spent my summers making copies for editors on Avenue of the Americas. Instead, I spent my precious summer vacations traveling through Europe, driving half-way across the country, and visiting friends who had decided to move away from the City of Angels.
So my question to you (I was bound to get to it eventually), dear Ed 2010-ers, is this: How can I land an entry-level Editorial Assistant position without all those fancy internships to glitterize my resume? Does an advanced degree and an extreme willingness to learn everything there is to know about the editing world count for anything anymore? I know I’m guilty of a few editorial faux pas like comma splices and the occasional awkward syntax, but I’m willing to start at the bottom and learn the ropes.
Any suggestions?

And remember...
When pitching and applying to magazines, make sure to write it in a journalistic style, not in the elaborate prose of a Lit major. You’ll prove even more how willing you are to learn the ropes.
There’s an Ask Ed question
There’s an Ask Ed question about this on the homepage … and, unfortunately, speaking from what I’ve seen in the industry as an assoc ed , people in the magazine business are sadly not going to see your MA in Lit as being relevant. This isn’t as true for book publishing companies, but maybe because journalism started as a trade, internships are really important.
I’d advise the same thing the Ask Ed answer did—definitely keep trying but I’d up the pitching some more. I think if you can show that your INTEREST lies in magazines, which would be demonstrated by clips, that’d make up for an internship.
Good luck!
I know someone with at least
I know someone with at least 4 high-profile internships who still doesn’t have a job, so sometimes that’s just the way it goes. I will say, though, that you need to stop reading the blogs and website that are getting you discouraged because that won’t help you. You need to approach your job search with confidence and enthusiasm because it will show in your cover letters. Forget about not having a New York internship. Will it be much more difficult without them? Yes. Can you succeed without them? Yes.
You need to build a network. That’s something I won’t give advice on because it’s different for everyone. What works for you may not work for someone else, but be creative and think outside the box. 6 degrees of separation is real, and in most cases it’s less than that. Be someone who others will want to hire, and make sure you’re projecting a good attitude.
thanks!
Thanks! Your advice is helpful and encouraging. It’s nice to hear something positive for a change!
