Demanding raise during salary freeze?

I work for a B2B magazine company. Recently, my co-worker left our magazine, leaving me to take over her duties. I now do my duties (as assistant editor) and hers (as associate editor). My company is under salary and hiring freezes. So we will not hire anyone in her spot, and I cannot receive a raise even though I am taking over her duties. Does this kind of situation warrant me the right to demand a raise? To say that I will leave if I don’t get one? To get a job offer and tell my current employer my options? Thanks in advance.

I would start applying to

I would start applying to other places first then ask your employer for a raise thats equally competitive. We use a payroll services company and have been lucky to not be affected as much but the current economy.

Go for the title, not the money...

I’d definitely ask for a promotion in title to associate editor. if you’re doing the work for that, you deserve that title. However, you can’t ever demand that someone give you a raise. If the company is in a hiring/salary freeze, they simply won’t give you one anyway, and if you threaten to leave, they may say to you, “fine…there’s the door,” as they will surely give your duties to an EA or someone else who can do the work and do it more cheaply. Simply having the title increase will help a lot, as you can better leverage job opportunities if you do decide in the future that you want to leave. For now, i’d just take what I could get, and that looks like a promotion title, not a raise.

I would definitely go in and

I would definitely go in and insist that they at least give you a promotion in title, since you’re doing the duties of the higher ranking person, and ask them to guarantee that you’ll get a raise in the next six months, or sooner if they’re already established their 2009 budget. It sucks to feel underpaid for the work you’re doing, but jobs are pretty scarce right now even in better-paid B2B, you might not do better elsewhere.

On the other hand, if you get the sense that they’re going to work you to death for not enough money indefinitely, then maybe you play a little hardball. The problem with throwing your cards on the table and saying you’ll quit if they don’t give you a raise, though, is that you might end up having to quit—so if you’re ready to go that road, definitely have a competing offer lined up as opposed to just threatening to walk if they don’t pay you more.
