Chicago Home + Garden and Chicago Magazine

I submitted clips and my resume for the Chicago Home + Garden internship last spring. The editor never got back to me; they also didn’t send me a rejection letter via e-mail or snail mail. I had to e-mail the editor-in-chief to see if the decisions had been made. She only replied with two words: “yes. sorry.” I understand that editors are very busy; however, isn’t this unusual to not receive at least a formal rejection letter?
Has anyone interned with either of the Chicago publications? If so, what is the best way to get your foot in the door? I sent relevant clips to Chicago Home, i.e.-related to Home building and architecture, ect. I’ve been freelancing for a number of years and now that I’m in grad school I wanted to gain experience with these pubs. Any suggestions? Thanks!

The arrangement and

The arrangement and placement of flowers around the dead is humankind’s oldest tribute, the oldest form of memorialization, the oldest act of mourning.

Throughout history, flowers have been used to symbolize every aspect of the life cycle, from birth through death. For example, the fragility of life is symbolized by the flowers. To grow and expand, flowers require the proper conditions. The same is true for human beings. In death, flowers are used to symbolize how the beauty of creation is temporary; as surely as the flower must be cut from the stem, so it is with human life.

Choose Sympathy flowers with a wide variety of arrangements in baskets from Florist Toronto.

Very good article written by

The Fortress of Selectivity

I’ve interned every where in Chicago, and Chicago Magazine is the hardest to tap into. While I was preparing my fall application (I’ve applied every season, to no avail), my friend got the job, with one internship under her belt! I’m not really sure what the criteria they are looking for is, but I’m more or less over it. I have since landed an amazing internship with CS, specifically, the Men’s Book. Sometimes, you just have to move on.

CS magazine intern

How many interns does CS normally take each season? And are you able to specify which section you would like to work for? I am a student in Chicago right now and looking for a magazine internship. Because I am an avid CS reader I thought I would give it a try.
Anything else you can tell me about the application process would help! Thanks

what is your email?

Hey! thanks for the quick response…. however my computer is not showing all the previous posts, so i don’t see your email. I really would like to talk to you about the CS process though! I am ssmith15@luc.edu if you just want to email me there…. Thanks!

Good Advice

What was your experience @ CS? Was the application process exclusive like Chicago Mag?

Still there

I’m actually still there now. It’s funny, because I didn’t specifically apply for my position now. From what I can gather, they kept my resume on hand since last year, and when a position opened up, I was called. My resume now is much better than last year’s, but I still got the job. I work for the Men’s Book, which is fitting, I suppose. If you were interested in applying, do it soon; spots are filling up for fall, if they haven’t already.

Can I keep in touch with you

Can I keep in touch with you via e-mail? I have a few other questions about the magazine. You’ve been really helpful; I appreciate it.

Sure thing!

Has anybody interned at

Has anybody interned at Chicago mag? How was your experience? Anyone there in the fall?

I just finished my internship this winter at Chicago magazine

It was great!! I got a byline, and I learned a lot. I made some amazing friends there (hi if you’re reading this!). My only “in” was that two of my friends had previously interned there and recommended me for it. Unlike other internships I’ve had (Us Weekly, Lucky Magazine) you actually are supposed to come to the editorial meetings and you have a bigger part in the editorial process. Your main job is fact-checking while you’re there. You interact with a lot of different senior editors, and it’s great. I really loved it!

It's pretty much the standard in this industry...

for them NOT to get back to you. It sucks, but it’s just how it goes. Some publications probably get hundreds of applications and sending out letters or emails to each of them just doesn’t really make the top of the priority list.
In my personal experience I would estimate maybe 5% actually tell you you’re being rejected. It’s actually a surprise when they do

Wax is one of the hardest

Wax is one of the hardest materials to clean from carpets, so as a rule of thumb, don’t drop any! But if you’ve messed up and got some hot wax on your precious carpet, there’s still a good chance that you can remove it.

With the proper techniques, you can make even the ugliest wax stain clean up entirely. Additionally if you are look for carpets and rugs for your home then just take a look at Area Rugs Toronto for a full range of carpet and rugs. They have some of the best collection you will find from all over the world.

That's how it tends to be...

Chicago Magazine is usually good at getting back to people, but the spin-off brands like Chicago Home & Garden, or Chicago Fashion, are actually run by another person at the office (Jan Parr I think is her name.) Shoot them another email, and you may have more luck.

Thanks for your response. I

Thanks for your response. I personally e-mailed Jan Parr, and she only responded back with a couple words. I do realize she is extremely busy. How might I grab her attention with my application the next time around so this doesn’t happen to me again?

Unfortunately, it’s not

Unfortunately, it’s not unusual at all. When you’re prioritizing all the things you have to write when you’re running a magazine, intern rejection letters are pretty low on the list. You can more or less take it as a given that if they’re interested, they’ll get back to you—it’s good to follow up, of course, but if they’re not going to hire you there’s no real rush to respond to you.

Thank you for your response.

Thank you for your response. Do you think it makes a difference what school you are attending? Do you have tips for making sure my application is on point for the next time I apply so it won’t end up in the slush pile?
