Why does everyone want a career in fashion?

I read this board frequently and can’t get over how many young women post seeking advice about getting jobs at fashion magazines. What is so appealing about it?

For those here who aren’t into fashion, what is your goal?

why fashion?

it actually took me a while to realize that i wanted to be a fashion journalist. i took graphic design classes in high school, then came to college with the idea that i wanted to major in film. fashion had always been an interest and it only grew, so i switched from a film major to a communications major. i’d never seen sex and the city and the devil wears prada had no influence on me. i just see fashion as another art form. it’s wearable art that influences your daily life. you’re judged on it everyday and although many people say that they don’t care what they wear, they do. fashion, no matter how superficial it is, impacts your life. sure no one in the industry is curing cancer, but it’s still a big deal. as a fashion journalist you decide what your readers will see. it’s you who helps put the designers name out there. people pick up magazines to see what you have to say about this or that new thing. i have strong opinions about fashion and it’s the ability to shape the industry and influence readers that i love. i know it’s not as glamorous as it seems, but i’ve been through worse, so making it as a fashion journalist isn’t something i’m worried about.

Some people just like

Some people just like fashion, but perhaps not the design aspect, so that’s why they want to cover it. I love fashion and writing, and none of that came from Sex and the City or Devil Wears Prada.

But I also enjoy beauty, health, and travel. Covering lifestyle sections would be fun, and if I could be a traveling journalist like Anthony Bourdain, that would of course, be better for me than working with a bunch of clothing racks.

Nevertheless, I’ve always wanted an editor position, so that is my goal for now, not the traveling journalist one.

YES!

When I get a job my second happiest moment (after that feeling of enlightened fulfillment) will be to realize I never have to see the phrase, “A saucy new site for 20 and 30-something ladies” again. If you’re a fashion magazine, fine… but what is the purpose of yet another online fashion blog/commentary start-up by a young Parsons/Pratt/Columbia graduate? When your hook is your “sassiness,” you’ve got a problem.

I want to work for O magazine (a fantastic publication that includes a style section which never falters into the out-of-touch, ephemeral, or condescending territory of many other women’s magazines) or in anything having to do with politics.

I would like to work for a

I would like to work for a women’s, culture/lifestyle or regional entertainment magazine. I enjoy fashion, but I am not on style.com every day and Vogue is not my favorite magazine, and I would rather use my money to travel than buy designer clothes. That being said, I consider myself an adventurous dresser. I put a lot of thought into having a unique look and do read fashion blogs, but for my career interest, I think I would be better focusing on other things. Not to say I wouldn’t work in a fashion closet, because it IS an interest of mine, but I just see other aspects of magazine journalism as more appealing. But still, people still think that because I want to work in magazines, my #1 top choice of all time would be Vogue…not necessarily so.

Insider's Opinion

It’s okay to aspire to work in fashion. It’s both difficult and rewarding.

I work in fashion editorial for a powerful, international company. I absolutely love it. Everyday, I make decisions that determine what sells. Prada, Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Balenciaga, Burberry Prorsum… etc.

I got into the business because I love art, culture, and self expression. I also like the science behind fashion… decisions aren’t made on a whim.

Its not for everyone. And please, The Devil Wears Prada is not an accurate portrayal of a major glossy. My colleagues are wonderful people… friendly mentors who care about your life beyond the revolving doors.

I also agree

Fashion is so over-rated. While my ultimate dream is to work for a national women’s glossy, I’m way more interested in features and/or entertainment than fashion. From my own experience, fashion seems more cut-throat and less rewarding(no bylines, recognition, etc), and dealing with products in the closet just does not appeal to me.

visibility

They’re glamorous and probably the magazines that most editor-hopefuls are most familiar with. How many young women (or men, for that matter) run to the mailbox every month to eagerly grab the latest issue of Washing Machine Repairman Monthly and say, “Oooh, I wanna work in b2b publishing when I grow up!”

I tried to do the fashion magazine thing for a couple of months after graduation (blame the release of The Devil Wears Prada that summer) and then saw that there was a lot more out there … and that my chances of not only being hired but actually gaining power relatively quickly were better elsewhere.

Blame Sex and the City.

Blame Sex and the City.

I'm With You!

I have no interest in fashion whatsoever, and I feel like I’m the only one! As far as the types of publications I aspire to, I’m interested in lifestyle, health, business, travel, general interest, regional, news, men’s, trade…just about anything and everything except fashion.

it's accessible

i think sex and the city is a good answer, as is devil wears prada. i also think many young girls don’t realize that there are many other things to do at women’s and fashion magazines- they just assume fashion is where it’s at, sadly.

many girls (unrealistically) think they have an edge in the fashion business because they know a few designers names and simply like fashion. fashion is everywhere and in our faces, so many people think they are more prepared and talented than they actually are.

i work very closely with market/fashion editors at my magazine and in my opinion it is such an unrewarding job. you call in a couple outfits and someone else decides everything else about the shoot and your outfit may or may not be used and then you send it back. i guess if you like shopping and would like to shop for a living and feel excited about that, then maybe fashion is for you, but i personally don’t see the allure either.
