yes! I just had an interview with Resource today, and got an internship with them in the fall! so I am hoping I can find a job as well. I am looking to photo production places and I’ve interviewed with studios, but thanks for the Workbook.com website, I need to check it out!
The problem with smaller
The problem with smaller magazines is they usually don’t have the budget to actually have a photo department … in those cases, the art director/designers are doing the photo research/editing/directing. You could definitely approach these magazines with your photography services, and since you’re just starting and they’re looking for the “cheaper” option, your needs might match up. I’d look into trade mags specifically, and any of those freebies you see in newsstands on the corner. Also go to one of those huge magazine stores (there’s a fashion-centric one on 40th st near 5th Ave across from Bryant Park, there’s another big one on 23rd St near Home Depot, other places too) and look at ALL the publications you’ve never heard of … from WatchTime to Stylus (about pens) to random music magazines, etc. Look at their mastheads and see what their art/photo dept looks like. See if you can figure out where their editorial offices are, and if they’re in NYC, approach them, either to help in the office or to possibly shoot for them. Those types of mags are always looking for last-minute photographers, as well as event photographers.
Also, have you tried working at a photo rep? There are a ton here, so that might be an option, and would allow you to learn the ins and outs of having a rep, as well as making contacts with their photographers. Photo agencies (like Getty, Retna, etc) might also be worth checking out, tho that’s more about sales.
Thanks
I didn’t know about the bookstore on 23rd, but i’ve been to the one near Bryant Park.
I’ve interviewed with a few photo rep places, but they really want people with experience, but I keep applying to openings and just informational interviews. The big stock/agencies like Getty and Corbis are hard to look into, but thanks for the info i will def check out that book store.

The one on 23rd I think is a Universal News … there are several in the city, but that’s one of the bigger ones.
What about photo studios? Have you tried any of those? It would be more administrative, but at least you’d be making contacts with photographers and industry people. Maybe even try prop houses … again, it’s getting a bit off track, but you’re making contacts. (Look into Workbook.com, lebook, etc for lists of places.)
Have you seen Resource magazine? It’s specifically for photo production people, a recent startup … I found it at Props For Today, but they have a website: resourcemagonline.com with some interesting info/links. Might lead to some other ideas, or maybe even see if they need interns/assistants.
