Hi everyone,
I’m currently trying to figure out whether I’d like to work in magazines or publishing. I’d love to work for an amazing place like Knopf (in editorial). I’m probably going to try and apply for publishing internships for next summer in NYC. Does anyone here have experience in this field? Has anyone ever completed the Random House internship program? I just would like to know what it’s like before I jump right in.
Thanks!

i would definitely consider
i would definitely consider doing the nyu or columbia summer publishing programs. they’re a little pricey, but nearly everyone in my program had a job in book publishing after a few months. i wouldn’t recommend it for people who really want to get into magazines…most of the presenters just come in and tell you that magazines are dying and to find a job elsewhere (really). but it’s golden for book people.
Hi grayhardeman, I know most
Hi grayhardeman,
I know most of the people on this board are more interested in magazine publishing than book publishing, so I will try my best to answer your question. My first suggestion would be to try and contact alumni from your college that are working in book publishing now (at any company, not just the big name ones). I haven’t found book publishing to be stuffy or snobby by any means, but I do get the impression that breaking in is a bit more of a mystery, so that’s why I think it’ll be really helpful to have a personal contact. With magazines, there are websites like this one, plus with mastheads and everything, they’re more public to begin with, but the book biz is a little more traditional and subdued, so it can be tough to find out about opportunities. Apply to all the big programs, but realize that they get many applications, and your resume will have a much better shot if you have a connection within the company, or get in through a special program with your school. It may sound annoying, but HR departments at publishers are very busy, and finding interns may not be their top priority, so you really have to work any connection you might have.
It might also be helpful to familiarize yourself with Publishers Weekly and Mediabistro’s galleycat blog, both of which are well-read in the publishing industry. Start reading books like an insider might—check the acknowledgments for names of editors and agents, and try to get a sense of what kinds of books different publishing houses and imprints tend to publish. Even if you’re a die-hard literature major, you may find that you have a real interest in a really specific type of book, like cookbooks or graphic novels. Also, don’t forget that there are many (many many many) areas in publishing beyond editorial. Many people start out wanting to work in editorial because it’s the most visible, but there is also really interesting work to do in publicity (helpful to have a journalism background), marketing, sales, and more.
Good luck!
