Interning in Philadelphia

Hi all,

I go to school about 20 minutes outside of Philadelphia - unfortunately, as Philly’s media market appears less than lucrative or thriving these days - but alas, I am in search of a fall internship. I basically just want to make sure I know about as many Philly-based mags/websites as possible…I figure there must be ones out there I do not know about!

Aside from Philly mag, Philadelphia Style and some local Main Line mags, I’m at a loss. I think I’d really like to intern at a website to get some online experience and even some clips…anyone know of any? I’ve seen information from aroundphilly.com about interning, but other than that I’m not sure of many Philly-based websites or magazines.

Any direction would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!!

City Paper and Philadelphia

City Paper and Philadelphia Weekly hire tons and tons of interns each season/semester and they give you many opportunities to write. They also both interns for their websites. Also, there’s Philadelphia Magazine and didn’t they just launch 215 Magazine? Though I know from personal experience that Philly Mag has a stick up its butt and won’t even hire you as an intern even after you’ve graduated AND had entry-level experience.

Philly Mag is actually

Philly Mag is actually pretty open to post-grad interns, actually, in my (recent) experience. There were several older interns who were looking to make a career change when I was there. If you’re just disgruntled about there not being any open full-time positions, well yeah. I don’t picture anyone leaving there anytime soon and they’re not exactly looking to fill vacancies.

I live in Philly and commute to New York…it’s totally doable if you want to work at a national mag

How does that work for you?

Hello,
I’ve been considering moving to Philadelphia in the future and commuting to NYC to work. Are you completely misreable with the commute/hours?

I agree

…with your calling me out on my unnecessary attitude! But I was born and raised in Philly (so I can’t help it) AND it kind of aggravates me when people who are just starting out and looking to intern come onto this site and say “I know about the two biggest publications, but are there any others?” No, you want to get into journalism, then DO YOUR RESEARCH! Anyway, I apologize for any bitchiness, but the biggest thing about making it in this industry is having a go-getting, can-do attitude! And that includes the very basic task of finding publications around your college and applying for internships…

Umm...

Wouldn’t be using a forum such as Ed - which is set up for networking and advice purposes - be a pretty smart part of “doing your research?” I think that it would.

What a bunch of unnecessary

What a bunch of unnecessary attitude. But then, that IS the Philly way. ;-)

I have never heard anything good about Philly Mag from inside the industry, so I was just giving my experience. Yours was different- this is good to know.

And I’m at Conde Nast now too, so I know from stick up their butt, mmkay?

Philly Rocks!

I was born and raised in Philly and started my interning and writing locally and now I work for Conde Nast…so 1st of all, just relax and stop bemoaning your situation. It can be done.

2nd. To say that Philly Mag has a “stick up its ass” is entirely untrue. I was an intern there for a summer and was one of six. I had an incredible amount of responsibility and was published in both the magazine and the website during the three months I was there. Perhaps you’ve maybe been rejected by them as a post-grad, but Philadelphia Magazine is an award-winning, smart and witty magazine with a readership of 50,000+ and they are one of the few magazines who still has writers on staff, and they even have designated web interns! I’ve kept in touch with many of the editors, one who has just taken a position as the Fashion Ed. at Seventeen…proving local mags can lead to great things! Just sticking up for a magazine that gave me my first published clips…and FYI: Talking crap about a magazine that may have burned you in the past will get you nowhere.

3rd. Besides Philadelphia Magazine and Philadelphia Style, there are - as you say - a handful of “Main Line mags” - Those magazines can be your jumping off point! Main Line Today, The Main Line Times, and MAINLINE are awesome publications and they always need interns. Philadelphia Weekly and Bucks magazine as well. In order to make it in this industry, you need to be inventive, do your research and think outside the box. Go to Borders and take note of every local publication. Grab free papers from newsstand boxes on the sidewalk and contact them. Wilmington, DE is only 30 mins away - write for Wilmington Today! Temple Journalism has an awesome new mag called 215. Newspapers: try The Inquirer, The Philadelphia Daily News, The City Paper, Al Dia - the spanish language paper, South Philly Review, Philadelphia Gay News and the Philadelphia Tribune. As for websites try gophila.com, phillyburbs.com, templetimesonline.com, phillyfuture.org and philly.com.

Trust me, it isn’t your proximity to Philadelphia that’s the problem…

Where Philadelphia + Lots of other Philly Intern opportunities

Where Magazine in Philadelphia frequently accepts pre and post college interns: wheretraveler.com. Editor as of 12/09: Karen Gross, karen.gross@morris.com, 215-893-5100x22.

Also look to all the great historical societies in Philly which publish magazines, you often get wider experience at smaller places: Chemical Heritage magazine, chemheritage.org, editor@chemheritage.org. I know often has interns. Others would be worth researching.

Some sizable lit mags too: If you’re at Drexel, definitely look into Painted Bride Quarterly, it is nationally renowned and has a wholly student staff except for one full-time editor. Philadelphia Stories looks for interns: philadelphiastories.org; Philly Fiction might too: phillyfiction.com.

Neighborhood mags too: South Philly Review, Weekly Press (Center City), Queen Village Crier, University City something, Northeast Times, the Spirit (N.Libs and elsewhere).

Thanks!

I’ve known people who’ve interned at Philly mag as well. Haven’t heard much about their experiences, but I will say I do like the magazine.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, it’s all really helpful. It’s not so much that I’m complaining about Philadelphia, I’m just still not super-familiar with the area and I wasn’t sure where to begin.

oh, it's out there.

What about the alt-weeklies? City Paper and Philadelphia Weekly hire tons and tons of interns (as in 20 at any given time) each season/semester and they give you many opportunities to write. They also both interns for their websites. Also, there’s Philadelphia Magazine and didn’t they just launch 215 Magazine? Though I know from personal experience that Philly Mag has a stick up its butt and won’t even hire you as an intern even after you’ve graduated AND had entry-level experience. Puh-lease.

There’s also the big Philly blogs, like philebrity.com and phawker.com, the Gawkers of the city.

I saw that you also posted about being from Central NJ. I am from central NJ AND also go to school 20 minutes outside Philly and am looking for a mag internship there. Are you stealing my identity?

Thanks :)

Thanks for your help! Those are some great ideas and good things to know in general, for anyone in Philly.

And yay NJ :) And I don’t think I’m stealing your identity, haha - drop me a line (lep5887@gmail.com) if you ever want to chat about school, mags, or whatever in Philly. Maybe we’re each other closest assets and we’ve never even realized!
