How does everyone feel about interning after graduating? Right now, I’m in a weird situation as I have graduated but havent found the exact job I want. I have the opportunity to intern at a great publication, but will have not money to pay my bills.
Is there anyone out there interning after graduating that has some advice for me? What are you doing? How do you get by financially. Do you freelance?
The worst part is explaining to my parents that even though I have finished school, I still have to work for free.

I know how you feel about
I know how you feel about graduating then having to work for free. It really does suck. I just graduated, and I am interning at a local pharmacy. I can barely pay my bills. I have to work as a receptionist for a different company part time, and that still isn’t enough. Too bad there’s no way you can get a fake college diploma and be done with it. I guess that’s just life though. As soon as the internship is done, you will be so happy I can promise you that!
We're all in the same boat
I’m doing it right now as we speak. I just graduated this past May, and I’m probably going to go into another unpaid internship after this one is done. The area that I’m in has so few journalism opportunities, especially paid ones. I’ve been working part-time jobs to support myself financially and working maybe three days at my internship. It’s getting harder and harder to do it, but I guess it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make to get the job. I plan on pursuing more aggressively other editorial internships that pay like the Southern Progress internship or the Entertainment Weekly one. Because the magazines here in Atlanta are so small-staffed it’s really unrealistic for me to think I’m going to be offered a position at one of them. I’m just really trying to find something before it becomes a year that I’ve been out of school.
Join the club
I graduated last year and work four days a week and intern 3 days a week. It’s basically what you’re going to have to do.
To all of you complaining about butting heads with your parents who are supporting you, please please stop complaining. That is incredibly annoying. There are a lot of us out there who have to pay our own bills and student loans, and we still make it.
Internships without Credit?
I understand where you’re coming from. When I graduated in 2007, I applied to every posting and even applied to companies without postings. After taking a job at a restaurant, I knew I needed to take steps toward starting my career. I started interning at a local paper in Queens. It was an hour and a half commute from home and it didn’t pay. even though it was hard juggling a full-time job and an editorial internship which required me to do writing from home as well.
However, I still haven’t found a job. Does anyone know of any companies that hire interns (preferably part time) that aren’t in school. I am willing to intern, but outside of the newspaper, I have found few places that accept interns who have graduated. Any suggestions?

Yeah, everyone does it...
and, I’m actually enjoying my current internship quite a bit, but the problem is that some of our parents who put us through school are not going to be so understanding. My problem isn’t even so much that I haven’t found a full-time job yet…it’s that I know my mom and dad are constantly watching me and breathing down my neck. They have absolutely no idea the pressure I’m under to prove to them that I made the right career choice, and…oh yeah…I’m an enormous financial burden, too. Fun times.
interning after college
Time Inc. has paid, full-time internships. I know you have an opportunity to work for a great publication, but you should really look into it. They pay $8-$10 an hour from what I remember. Go for an informational there; they called me two months later for an internship opportunity, I was hired six months after (which was technically 14 months after graduating college!). Don’t give up…it’s hard for parents to understand the publishing world and how interning is a necessity.
Tell Me About It.
I’m interning for free, and I’ve been out of college for more than a year. This is now my fifth internship, and I still can’t find a full-time job.
Right after college, I interned at a major regional magazine for a full year, and now I’m on my very first NY internship at a website/magazine that I think is awesome. It sucks not being paid, but I really am enjoying the experience, and have my fingers permanently crossed that a full-time gig will open up there.
As far as money? Let’s just say that my parents aren’t too pleased with me. I’ve done nothing but butt heads with my mom, in particular, who doesn’t understand that this is not accounting or business and you don’t just walk out of college with the job of your dreams. She has no idea the pressure that’s on me right now, and acts as though I ENJOY mooching off them and not being able to afford to move out on my own. I’m doing some freelancing for local magazines, and that gives me about enough money to buy a meal once in awhile, but it’s impossible for me to pay my health insurance, phone bill, etc.
It just sucks.
The same goes for me. I
The same goes for me.
I have interned for Condè Nast, Wenner Media, Time Inc. and Hearst, as well as Nylon. That’s five internships at amazing magazines, and I still can’t find a job! When I leave, they hire an intern. When I start, they’ve just hired an intern. It’s difficult, you can’t be in 10 places at once.
It’s disheartening, but that’s the business. If it’s something you really want to do, you can’t give up. Just make as many connections as you can! A lot of us are in the same boat, unfortunately.
question
I’m just curious. Could you provide your comments or just a little information on your experience interning for all those publications. In particular, probably like everyone else, I am interested in your experience at Condè Nast, Time Inc., Hearst, and Nylon.
What was your position? What were your job duties? Approximately how long did you intern for and when? How did you go about finding the internships? Have you had any paid work or clips?
Thanks in advance!!! :)
Congrats on such great internships!
Also, how long have you been out of college, or what is your educational background?
can be challenging...
I graduated early, so my parents agreed to help me out. There are times when it is incredibly frustrating to know that you are working full time and making nothing in the process. I graduated in December and interned full time from January-May at two different magazines (2 days at one, 3 at the other). Now I’m interning full time for another magazine entirely. I have done some freelancing as well so that I can contribute to groceries, bills, etc. I don’t regret my choice - I’ve learned tons and have a lot more experience. At the same time, I think people should be paid for their skills, and while it looks like my current internship will turn into a paid gig soon, I’m still keeping my eyes open for job opportunities just in case.
Same situation
I just graduated in May, but I’ve been interning at a mag this summer. It’s tough to work for free, but I really think this internship was an excellent stepping stone. I just got a freelance job out of it. Sooo, if you have some savings you could live off of (or perhaps the parents are willing to help?), then I’d say take the internship. Also, I’m not so sure holding out for the “exact” job you want is wise. Jobs are scarce.
same deal
why don’t you consider interning and working somewhere part-time? for example if you’re interning 3-4 days a week, bartend/waitress or something along those lines at night to make ends meet.
everyone does it
interning is a necessary step to working in magazines. we have all done it and there is no need to complain or get upset since it’s the only way to gain experience and contacts. i interned after college for free 5 days a week and worked all weekend to afford my rent and ramen. everyone does it and we all make it through ok, so just buck up and take the plunge.
