What are the positions I should be applying for after doing internships? Are Editorial Assistants the only positions available? Better yet, can somebody give me the different levels you move up to in this industry and their duties? I find it hard to believe that after college thousands of journalism majors fight for one position at a magazine. It seems unbalanced. I can see myself writing features. Do some magazines have several feature writers on a staff or just that one features editor? I’m asking this because most magazine staffs are so small and just prefer articles from freelancers. Also, I plan to be in this business for years but it seems with the publications I’ve interned at, everyone seems to be so young. Where are the older faces, do they just disappear after a while? lol

thanks, my fears are now more calm. I will try to find that thread with the listings too, I wish we had a search bar or something lol
Don’t we have a search
Don’t we have a search bar? It’s above the Jobs field, just under the Ed2010 logo…
Young people =
Young people = less experience = cheaper. If you visit the Media Bistro boards, you’ll find a lot of people complaining about that.
As far as positions go, it does depend on the magazine. At my mag, the first rung is assistant editor. For a list of positions, search threads on this board. Someone did a pretty thorough job of listing them recently. Again, though, not all publications have the same positions, and even the same titles may come with different responsibilities. It’s better to think of yourself in terms of your capabilities (I can do this, and this, and this), rather than categorizing yourself (I’d make a great ME, EAL, publisher). And it sounds like you’re doing that already, which is great.
I think it really depends on
I think it really depends on the magazine and if they’re currently hiring or need a position filled. Rest assured, if you did an amazing job at your internship people will remember it and if a position opens up they will tell you about it!
