Hey Everyone.
I just have some general questions, so if everyone could try and add their 2 cents, that would be great :-)
Background:
This Fall semester, I’ll be a Junior in college. I’m currently majoring in Computer Science and Digital Media Art.
I’d like to get a few internships in the magazine industry, and I know that from my location (Baltimore) there are a few around me.
The thing is, I’m not sure where to begin.
How does one get an internship with a magazine company?
If you have had one before, what experience did you bring to the table before the internship began? (IE: Please do not tell me you had a previous magazine intern. before to get you in the door.)
What suggestions/advice would you give me to break into the field?
How would I tailor my resume with little to none experience? Besides having leadership positions on campus, having a great GPA, what can I put on my resume?
THANKS LADIES!!

The main thing you need to
The main thing you need to do is GET some experience by working on your school publications or any local publications: Your school newspaper, yearbook, magazine, literary mag, alumni mag, department newsletters, dorm flyers, ANYTHING to get some real experience. It doesn’t matter right now how trivial the publication/product may seem, it’s the first step to getting chances at MORE experience at better places. Check out your school’s public relations/communications departments … they often need assistants/interns. Also look around you in your school’s town … are there are any publications that maybe you haven’t noticed? If you can’t find any projects who need your help (but trust me, if you look hard enough, you’ll find something), then make up your own projects for yourself. Write your own stories, design your own pages, etc.
You also need to figure out what you want to do exactly in magazines … do you want to deal with the content, the writing, the editing? Or the design, the photos? Or maybe you like the production aspect, the part dealing with how the ads come in, making sure everything is good enough for the printer, etc. And then of course there’s the marketing departments, the public relations/events departments, the ad sales people, etc. Working for your campus and local publications not only gives you some experience, but also gives you insight into all these various aspects, to help you figure out what exactly you want.
