Not to be too harsh, but you sound a bit arrogant. Maybe that came across in the interview, and that’s why you didn’t get the position. Just because you may have had good internships previously doesn’t mean you are guaranteed anything.
Yes, you are experienced, but you’re an experienced INTERN. And I don’t mean that to sound harsh (hell, I was the girl with NINE internships in undergrad!) , because it does sound like you’re really looking for ways to improve! As an assistant editor who hires interns, I will say that, while you have a lot of experience, you don’t have much magazine experience. And that’s what I’m looking for. While the other experiences are terrific, show me you want magazines. Show me those internships made your realize you want magazines. Honestly, I got rejected from a couple internships I thought I was a great fit for, and I realized, I probably sounded like I thought I didn’t need to learn anything … it couldn’t have been further than the truth. So, if I were you, I’d downplay the internships that don’t have a direct connection to magazines, or else you sound like a career overachiever who’s waiting for a pat on the back so she can add a line to her resume (and, again, this isn’t about YOU per se, but this is how it might look)
Also, when you followed up, did you ask why you didn’t get the internship? Because that may be a reason why you didn’t get a response. Even if you thought it went well, there are a trillion reasons why you didn’t get it—they lost your resume, an old intern came back, someone hired too many interns and they put a cap on them before they even considered you, the EIC’s cousin’s best friend needed an internship, etc. Point is, it’s not personal. When you follow up, THANK THEM for interviewing them, tell them how much you enjoyed meeting with them, and that, while you’re dissapointed this opportunity didn’t work out, you’d love to be considered for additional opportunities in the future. Then, tell them what you’re doing now. Send clips. Make a connection. And, sometimes, it doesn’t work out. And it’s not your fault and it doesn’t mean you won’t be at that mag sometime down the road. So, chin up and good luck!
Hey, so I typed “instyle internships” in my Yahoo search engine and guess what popped up? It turns out they posted an internship on Ed2010 in January. They even list the person you can contact and everything. I’m thinking since they posted it in January, it was for a Spring internship. Maybe it’s not too late to get a summer or fall one. Here is the link http://www.ed2010.com/jobs/whisperjobs/2008/01/instyle-com-editorial-int…
In case you have trouble with it, the person to contact is Tiffany Black. I just noticed they are with timeinc which means they definitely have deadlines when it comes to internships. So good luck with that!
