Essence internship contact

Does anyone know who I can contact to apply for a fall internship at Essence???

i interned at elle magazine,

i interned at elle magazine, but i was a fashion associate intern. with that said, my responsibilities were to help all editors and their assistants whenever they needed assistance.

the internship, itself, wasn’t particularly “educational”, because i was so busy running around doing menial work, but it’s an incredible boost on your resume and trust me, they’re well aware of it.

the editors can be bitchy; their assistants can be bitchier. develop a tough skin, because you’re definitely going to need it. the hours are long and pretty grueling every day, so if you aren’t serious about it, i wouldn’t even bother wasting yours or their time.

I interned at both InStyle

I interned at both InStyle and Elle magazine. At InStyle I had a blast. My fellow interns were great and the editors at InStyle were so supportive and friendly. (Of course you had a few editorial assistants and a couple of editors who must of seen The Devil Wears Prada often and tried to act like that, but it was very few).

My experience at Elle was completely different. You would excpect that because Elle is a higher fashion magazine that they would be more about luxury but it wasn’t. The office/facililty was dirty. I remember the bathroon being similar to a public bathroom, they had few resources (the entire floor had to share two photocopier machines and we always had to “recycle”.) I had the worst time there, it was like they were on a tight budget cut and coming from InStyle I wasn’t used to that. However, my fellow interns were nice and for the most part the editors were okay. Where about 95% of the editors at InStyle were great and acted like mentors, I would say about 60% of the staff at Elle was cool.

I never interned at Essence, but I know a few people who have and they loved it. They said the people were nice and they learned a lot and build strong ties.

If you are considering between the two go for InStyle or Essence. Personally, between those two I think if you are looking for a mainstream magazine and want the “real feel” of the magazine industry go for InStyle. However, if you are an African-American woman and want to learn about the industry but still have a strong name pub, and feel relaxed in your environment go for Essence.

What kind of things did you

What kind of things did you do at InStyle?

I know people who work and

I know people who work and intern at ESSENCE..you don’t have to be Black or African American ( or a woman!) to have a good experience there, its like saying you should be White to gain from Cosmopolitan. From what I’ve heard ESSENCE is no Devil Wears Prada if thats what you consider “real feel” but they are a major title and do everything similar mags would do like Cosmo when it comes to features, fashion spreads, etc. but with a different demographic.

Response to I know people who work and

Like yourself, I know people who have interned and worked at Essence and please do not misinterpet my words.(From your tone I did not want to come across as putting Essence down, by any means). Naturally, you don’t have to be Black (or a Black woman) to have a good experience at the pub,(Essence is a great magazine and has done remarkable things in the pub industry), but don’t think for one second that a Black female wouldn’t have a different work environment at Essence vs. Cosmo. I have personally been to the offices of Essence a few times and have conversed with the staff as well as freelanced and been in the offices of Cosmo, Vogue, Bazaar, etc. and being a Black female I felt and experienced a sisterhood that no black woman can ever experience at the likes of Cosmo. Essence is majority run by black females who come from various economic backgrounds and when you enter the office you feel such a positive magnetic force that has to do because we are black women in the indutsry doing our thing and proud that we are doing it. And that is what I mean as “real feel”.

So of course you don’t have to be a black female to have a great experience at Essence, but being a black female at Essence is an experience you won’t get anywhere else. Ask your friends who work and intern there. If you notice most of the women journalist/editors at Essence are listed on the masthead for years. It has to be something to that.

I’m the only black intern

I’m the only black intern at my internship and I can’t help but feel isolated. I definitely understand what you are talking about and this makes me want to experience working there even more.

I interned at Essence...

I interned at Essence in the editorial department, and my experience was great! I got to do tons of stuff (but beware: you’ll get to do a lot depending on what section of the magazine you intern for. I showed interest in all of them, so I did work for all of them!)

The editors there were very nice and nurturing, provided that you are an outgoing person. If you are, you’ll get tons of opportunity thrown at you…I still freelance for the magazine now!
