I was laid off a month and half ago from my EA job at a major magazine website. I have been applying to so many jobs that I am qualified for and I don’t even get one interview! I know my resume and cover letters are good because I’ve done this before and I’ve had editor friends look at my resume. I’m thinking summer is a bad time since new grads are also in the market, but shouldn’t I have a one-up on them because I’ve had 9-10 months of EA experience already??
I wouldn't worry...
I think you’re right: It’s summer, so there are tons of new hires ready and willing to grab any job available. Yes, you’re got the experience, but I think employers at this point just want to hire someone they already know (you know, a friend of the family has a niece who wants to work in fashion mags…so she’s instantly hired.)
I’d just consider the industry. I mean, you were laid of not on your own doing but because the industry has no money right now, so you’ll surely find something once things get a little better. I’d probably just look for a job at a smaller publication that will surely benefit from your experience, and may give you a chance to do more work (and probably won’t lay you off.)
