Does anyone know where I can get started on freelance writing? I am not looking for pay, just want to write and get published. I already work in PR and would like to take my writing to the next level because I simply love it. I don’t have a lot of clips because I’ve only written for my college newspaper years ago and everyone asks for recent published clips. If not, are there any publishing/journalism courses you could recommend that may help me to get my foot in the door? Please help! Thank you!

Try your local newspapers. Seriously. I wrote a cold email to one of the editors at a local paper, and he got back to me on a type of internship. I told him I’m no longer in college (just graduated) and it didn’t bother him that he would give me assignments (or I would suggest stories) and he published it in the paper, and sometimes online. Do a cold email to newspaper editors nearby. You can try Examiner.com as another place to start, or even blogs are counting nowadays. Good blog sites are Wordpress.com and Blogger.com. Blogs aren’t that hard and it would be good practice. Or try local magazines, for example Springfield, MA has The Advocate, which is an alternative type of magazine.
