contacting editors - does it work?

I’m trying to get an entry-level job at a food magazine or a newspaper that does restaurant reviews in NYC, and people keep telling me to contact all the editors of the major food mags. I’ve tried emailing and snail-mailing my resume and clips, but I never get any responses. Does anyone know if there is a better way to get noticed at giant magazines like Gourmet, Food&Wine, and Saveur?

Thanks!!

start a super interesting

start a super interesting and fun food blog. after it’s off the ground and you are on a roll with it, send the editors your link. be proactive. show them that you have new ideas and interests and can bring something new to the table…

cold emails are tough. editors are so busy and it’s hard to reply to everyone, but if you have something to show, you may have better luck. cold calls and sending clips are rarely effective.

Yes and no. I cold emailed

Yes and no. I cold emailed an editor and two weeks later I had a job. Just be careful how you word it. I just expressed my interest in the magazine and what my qualifications were. I said if there were any openings I’d love to be considered, if not thank you for your time.
