transitioning to NYC from different media market

After nearly three years of experience in a different media market (where I was associate editor at a fairly well-known trade magazine in that city), I’ve made the jump to NYC. My thinking in staying in the city I was in (I also went to college there) was that I could get some great *real* experience without interning or being an EA just out of school. I had an informational interview yesterday with someone at a fairly large consumer magazine that basically told me that if I wanted to work at a large magazine, I might as well intern. Do you think this sounds right or what type of job do you think I should be looking for/my experience would equate to in NYC?

Starting over?

I’m experiencing a similar situation finding a job in NYC after four years as an editor in chief in Phoenix. I know it’s all about networking, but I assumed editors/HR departments would find years of management-level experience more valuable than “who you know.” Without starting from scratch as an intern or EA, what’s the best way to enter the New York media market from outside the state?
