I had an interview for a magazine internship, and immediately afterwards I sent a thank-you email. A week later I got an email saying I didn’t get the job. I ended up leaving the country for two weeks and didn’t email them back before going.
After coming back home, I decided to email them and say thank you even though a while had passed, and I asked in what ways I could have improved because I want to apply again the fall. I haven’t received a response in about two weeks now.
Should I be worried? Should I email again? Did I ruin my changes for the fall?
Of course you should try
Of course you should try again when the time comes. I once got turned down for an internship, but the next semester they e-mailed me asking if I was still interested. As for the editor, I honestly don’t think she owes you a reply. Your question is a bit intrusive. Just do better next time :o)
You don't have to worry about your chances
First off, it was nice of the editor to respond back to you instead of you wondering whether you got the internship or not. Just make sure when the time comes to apply again, to update your resume and include a couple of specific things you’ve discussed in your interview that’s worth mentioning in your cover letter.
I’ve gotten internships I really wanted the second time around, so don’t lose hope.
no worries
The editor probably didn’t have a chance to return your e-mail or doesn’t have anything useful to tell you in response to your question. I had a few very qualified candidates for interns and I went with the one that had the best personality. So the reason you didn’t get it is that they liked someone better, but that’s a strange thing for an editor to tell someone. I’m sure she didn’t mind that you asked. I never do. You should definitely apply again.
