Hey guys,
I want so bad to get an internship at a magazine but my interview skills are terrible and ruining my chances. I go into a panic and my mind goes blank. It’s so embarrassing. I did a phone interview the other day and every time I think about it, I cringe. The lady asked me to describe my work ethic in 3 words and I choked :(. In the midst of that interview my heart was beating so fast and my voice was getting shaky. How do you guys prepare for an interview? Any tips on getting over this anxiety? I think that deep inside, I have this feeling that I’m not good enough and it’s holding me back.
i agree with the above
i agree with the above comment, the internet is with a doubt growing into the most important medium of communication across the globe and its due to sites like this that ideas are spreading so quickly.

I do this geeky thing where
I do this geeky thing where I type up a fat list of all the potential questions they could ask me along with all the answers. I practice w/this and when the time comes I paste this up on the wall along with my resume/cover letter so I can keep referring to them during the interview and I can be sure that I know exactly what the documents say that my interviewer has.
on the side I also have a list of ways to describe my past experience, key words I would use to describe myself, career objectives and goals, etc. that I want to get across and I glance at that periodically throughout the interview to make sure I’m hitting all those points. also, that way if you run out of something to actually answer the question or you say something stupid you can always just turn it around into something else you have prepared for that kind of ties in.
I give myself ample time before and after (so if I have a class that ends at 11… I make sure not to phone interview until at least 11:45, just so there’s no problem/conflict). also, I know this is lame, but I am — I always clean my desk/room, dress up in interview clothes (heels and all!) and I usually talk standing up, because I feel like that makes your voice sound more upbeat and enthusiastic.
hope this helped a bit… I live in CA so I have been doing all phone interviews but so far so good! good luck and if you want any help with it just ask! jademarine28@gmail.com :)
I find that if I practice
I find that if I practice questions to myself, I have a heard time coming upwith the same answers when asked by the interviewer. They’ll say “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” And I’ll be thinking “Dammit how did I answer that last night, it sounded so good when I preacticed that one!” It’s not like memorzing the quadratic equasion!
I prefer to take some deep breaths, and answer the question as if my mom was asking me in a friendly non-judgemental conversation. Let your true personality shine through. They don’t want to hire a robot. Also, you don’t have to answer immediately. Pause, absorb the question and give a well thought out answer. It’s not a race. It is a good idea to research the company so you can throw in some stuff that you learned in with your answers when they apply. Just be calm and relax. They want to see someone shine in a high pressure situation, like an interview. And go on as many as you can! The more you go on the easier it may get. And go on ones for stuff you don’t want (those will be easier for you and will give you practice. And I found that I seem to always get the job offers from those too! Makes you feel good) You’ll be fine!
I feel your pain
I have the same problem, too! Every interview there will be a question asked by the interviewer that just makes my mind go completely blank and all I can do is stammer and turn red! I still don’t have a summer internship, so I think my interview skills are killing me.
What I do that helps is that I try to predict as many questions that they will ask as possible, and I do a practice interview inside my head the night before, trying to prepare responses to what will be asked. Also, if you’re interviewing for a magazine or Web site, make sure you do a really thorough job of making sure you are familiar with the content. And finally, do some research depending on the type of magazine. If I interview for something fashion related, for example, I spend the night before the interview reading fashion blogs, and researching designers.
I hope this helps, because interviews are really hard for me too, and I’m hoping there will be some other helpful responses to your post. I hope that interviewers understand how nerve-wracking it is for people, and that they don’t look too harshly upon minor moments of nervousness.
Best of luck on your search!
Thanks so much for the tips!
Thanks so much for the tips! I really like the one where you pretend the interviewer is a relative. I have another interview coming up and I will be doing a lot of research. I’m going to try to come up with some questions also. I’m so glad others feel the same way. Keep the tips coming. :O)
