how to tell how an interview went....

Hi guys,

I had an interview with a magazine in NY on Monday. I think it went well. Not great, but def not bad. The guy asked me how long I would be able to work with them (until Sept) and if I would be able to stay longer.

He also said he would be letting people know by Friday (or thurs/fri)

How can I tell how the interview went and when should I find out if I got a place (don’t some magazines hire interns on the spot?) Are there any indicators I should look out for in this process.

The waiting is killing me!
Thanks
Laura

Hey Laura, It’s so hard

Hey Laura,

It’s so hard to tell how interviews go. I remember I had two around the same time. I thought one went so well, while in the other the interview seemed totally standoffish and unreceptive to me. Turns out I ended up being sent an edit test for the mag where I thought the editor almost hated me, and not the one where I felt as though she loved me. All in all, it’s really hard to gauge how interviews go, so keep faith.

Also, I have never heard of magazines hiring interns on the spot. I had a number of offers this year, and I was informed of all of them post-interview.

I do recommend sending a thank-you e-mail a few days after the interview reiterating what sounds great about the position, and why you would be the perfect fit. If you don’t hear back by the Friday he said you would, I would wait a week (or week and a half) and send a polite e-mail asking if you can do anything to expedite the process, etc. (a nice way of saying..hurry up/when will I know).

Hope that helps!

Two magazines have hired me

Two magazines have hired me on the spot (for an internship), so it’s not impossible! The others waited a few days before calling me. Just be confident and assured of your skills and talent, it will shine through.

I would also suggest sending a thank you note the day after (or even the same day) of your interview. It’s very awkward for them to contact you before you had the chance to say thank you! The sooner the better, it will leave a lasting impression. Like the previous poster said, you should send a follow-up the next week if you have not heard from him by the said date.

Good luck!
