The Grads of '07

hello, I’ve been doing a lot of reading and talking with friend who graduated in the fall-summer of 2007 and not really having any luck getting a job (in and out of the media industry). Is it me or is this a common trend for some of the grads of 2007? I’ve been actively look for jobs for almost a year now. I can’t even get a temp agency to get me an interview, I’ve used all my resources, went to a job recruiter(if you look at my older post you can see what a disaster that was), cold e-mailed/face-booked people in the industry and the result is me being unemployed for the past 6 months. I’ve sent resumes for galleries, museums, magazines, studios, production companies, you name it, I’ve tried it! I’ve even applied for jobs not in the photo field. I honestly don’t know whats going on, I’ve been told I interview extremely well and my resume is “beautiful” (which I don’t understand b/c its lacking on the experience). On my last interview I was told I was “over-qualified”

So I guess my question is is there anyone else out there struggling to find a job that graduated in 07? Also I heard the job market is going to open up in 3-6 months, but with all the 08’s graduating it just tripled the playing field. ~sigh~
Have a great day!

eek!

I hope it’s better by ‘09…

well we’re in a recession

well we’re in a recession so its expected since communications is already a competitive industry. Just remember a recession comes every so many years so the job angst you’re dealing with was dealt with by generations before you and if they could get through it, so can you!

Best of luck!

It's always a struggle

I was an ‘07 who graduated early, with an EA position at a national magazine where I had interned the previous summer. The magazine folded after five months; I managed to find another job the same week, but got fired after three months (unexpected, but maybe deserved in hindsight). Then I took a $7/hr full-time internship for five months (could barely afford to eat) then got hired as an EA at a different magazine in January (which I hated), left last month and started a new job that I love as an associate editor. Moral of my twisted tale—you have to be tough. You have to know what you’re able to do and not take it personally or as a sign from the universe when you don’t have a job. There’s always temping, there’s always freelancing, and it’s always, always hard to get your life set up at the age of 22, which is not unique to the class of ‘07. All the ’08s are terrified too—and one of them will probably take your place this time next year once you’ve gotten your big break!

it doesn't get that much better

I’m an ‘01 graduate and I’ve been laid off three times since 2004! The first time I was laid off it was for several months. The second time it was a little over a year. Next month it’ll be my one-year anniversary of unemployment THIS TIME.

I am trying to change careers because I’m sick of it, but no one will even interview me because A.) I don’t have experience in other fields and B.) my journalism background makes me appear overly qualified so they won’t even touch me!

I’m trying to freelance in the meantime. Trying to get an admin or even retail or restaurant job is out of the question (they won’t even hire me).

Most days I regret ever pursuing publishing.

Hate to break it to you

Hate to break it to you guys, but this is something that graduating classes before 2007 dealt w/ as too. It’s not anything new. I graduated in ‘04 and it took forever for me to land a job. But I eventually did. Just keep on trucking, you’ll find a job soon enough.

My good luck ended

I graduated in December ‘06, found a job as an EA last summer and just got laid off yesterday, so I am now jobless again! It is especially hard to look for work in the summertime, so I am terrified and I am not hearing good things about the job market. It’s going to suck to be qualified and get turned down :(

ME!!!

I graduated in May 2007 and still haven’t found a job either. I’ve applied to every single EA, reporter, even intern position that is out there, and interviewed for a bunch too, but no one wants to hire me. I’ve spent the past year working at a retail store.
I’m so horribly discouraged that if I had the money to go back to school and choose a different major, I would. But I have $50,000 in school loans to pay back and I’m living with my parents to save money. AND IM WORKING IN RETAIL. God my life SUCKS.

wow we are totally in the

wow we are totally in the same boat. I had to move back home for a little while to preserve the money i made form my last temp job, but it was too hard and expensive flying back and forth to NYC for interviews, so I am renting an apartment on a temp lease and looking for a job (and using all my money for my savings, thank god my parents are helping me out a little, but that also sucks!) . THIS IS SUCH BS. Good luck and stay positive, I swear this is the same conversation I have with all of my friends…the Class of 2007 hates life! :)

similar sitch

Up until yesterday, I was a jobless 07 grad. In the year since graduation I have worked at a start-up travel magazine, was an unpaid intern and have been working retail and living at home. I got the call yesterday from Conde Nast HR, so it is possible! Just keep digging deep even through the worst rejections and it will happen for you!

Congrats awright! I saw that

Congrats awright! I saw that you got that assistant job, good for you! That makes me have a little hope, being a fellow 07 grad.. let us know how it goes! when do you start?

I hear ya.. where do you

I hear ya.. where do you live? Luckily I live on Long Island so I can hop on a train into the city to interview, that’s about the only good thing I got going. I can’t believe how hard the market is. And I’ve been mostly interviewing for newspapers, I thought that would be easier than magazines. But nooo.
As for my friends, most media people I know from my college have jobs in the industry already! Believe it or not, they have jobs at Fox, Cosmo, Life & Style, ESPN, Us Weekly, etc. I can’t believe that they got these great jobs and I’m stuck in a rut. They can’t even really help me out either cause they’re at the bottom of the ladder at those places.
I guess I just have to keep on trying, but sometimes I get so discouraged I cry. Lol how pathetic but it’s true. It makes you feel worthless to keep getting “no“‘s from everyone. Sorry about the long response! It kinda all came out at once lol.

I cry too.

I am in Jersey so its a very short ride into the city. Trust me you aren’t the only one who cries! I honestly some days want to curl into a ball, it is becoming so discouraging every day, I try to stay positive. There were Zero tears for me this week, and I gage that as a good week! STAY POSTIIVE!

...

jobs have been hard to come by, especially in nyc, and especially in media, ever since 9/11. not just class of 07, you just never realized it before because you were in college.

good luck
