For those of you who are already in your editorial positions, how did you start out? I will be graduating in two weeks (!!!) and I was just wondering how things turned out for you guys. Arranged jobs before graduation? Internships that turned into more? Months of searching till you found permanent digs? Just looking for some insight :)
I had a summer internship
I had a summer internship lined up a few weeks before I graduated and was hired by the company as an AE when it ended.
I job hunted for five months
I job hunted for five months after graduation before landing my first job—a full-time, temporary gig. It was supposed to last six weeks but I ended up staying there for seven months.
In my case, part of the difficulty of the job search was a desire to work in magazines in the South. We have plenty of ‘em where I live, but the jobs are still hard to come by. I ended up working in newspapers for about two years before making the switch back to a city mag. The newspaper experience was fantastic, but I LOVE what I’m doing now.
i was lucky to have
i was lucky to have something lined up that i started as soon as i submitted my final essays for school. a lot of my former interns are now graduating and seem to git into two groups - people taking the summer of to relax/travel and others have been interviewing actively for jobs since March…
Yeah..
Well I’m in no position to talk, I graduated last year and still don’t have a job. Been busting my ass looking. Working in retail. I hate my life.
Hey, persevere. I was
Hey, persevere. I was there.
I was cleaning toilets in January, working in Retail in March, and then working for the world’s second biggest videogames website in April. ^_^
One of my best friends spent over a year looking for her first industry job, so don’t feel bad if its been too long - you need to keep plugging away.
Myself, I left Uni to do a videogames DVD with The Princes Trust and HSBC loans, - did that for three years, failed to make any money, got bailed out by the parents, and started looking for work. Just found some last month. ;-)
I’ve heard a lot of good stories about work experience people being remembered when a job comes up, though.
Just have confidence, and keep plugging away.
Although as ever, it takes a bit of luck too, ;-).
