Hello fellow edsters. I’m moving to New York soon and I’ll be searching for that first job. I wondered what I should answer when asked my salary range for entry level art positions. I’ve got magazine experience and a pretty solid resume. I was thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of 35k. It seems high, but I’m under the impression that art people tend to be paid slightly more. (I know they tend to be in the newspaper biz, but I DO NOT want to go that route.) One colleague encouraged me to say at least 40k, but this seemed crazy to me. Thoughts?
A friend of mine makes $40K
A friend of mine makes $40K as an assistant art director (her first full-time job out of college), but that’s in LA. Perhaps it’s not the norm.
Assuming the roles you’re
Assuming the roles you’re applying for are art assistant/photo assistant/jr designer/etc, I would also say 30-35. I got 30 at my first job as an art assistant at one of the big publishing companies (with overtime pay, so it ended up being more.) I would not say 40 unless you’re going for a position a rung higher up the ladder.
30-35
30-35 for entry level… 40 is slightly unrealistic. i’m in art and i got 35 when i was hired, first full time job.
I agree with above posters
The range seems to be 30k to 35k for entry level art positions.
photo assistants at conde
photo assistants at conde nast start at 28k, but by all means ask for 35.
