Edit Tests and Copy Editing Qualifications

Hi,

I broke this out into a new post since it’s a bit different from Maggied’s a bit further down.
Two main questions:

I have yet to take an edit test at a mag, but would really like to feel somewhat prepared when/if the opportunity arises. Ed put up the link for edit tests a while ago, but there’s still nothing there. Does anyone know if there’s anywhere I could find samples so I could gain some familiarity?

Secondly, a similar question regarding copy-editing. I took a copy edit test a while back and apparently didn’t do well enough on it to continue the interview process. It was one where you pretty much corrected a draft to match a provided correct version. Is this typical, and how might I figure out where my failings were? I had considered myself a good copy editor and grammarian, having done it for four years through college and always being rather eagle-eyed. That experience threw me off balance a bit and I’ve hesitated to apply for other copy editing positions. The links others provided in the previous post seem helpful, so I’m going to give them a shot, but wanted to lay out my particular situation and see if anyone could help or relate.

Also, for a position geared toward copy-editing, does it look better to include my copy editing experience as a point under an EIC position at my school paper as I normally would, or should I break those skills out under a separate title, even if it was only something that was understood as part of my regular duties?

Thanks for any and all tips and advice.
Matt
