I’m looking to freelance write but havn’t done it before. I’ve been working in media for the past 2 yrs after graduating but I like to write for fun. I don’t have a lot of clips, except for maybe college newspaper ones so I’m not looking to get paid. Does anyone have any good ideas as to where and how I can get started? Thanks so much!

It’s hard to write for big publications without clips. Correction: it’s impossible to write for big publications without great clips. That being said, you should start off trying to write for small newspapers and magazines that more than likely won’t pay. You’ll get some experience writing and pitching before you move on to bigger publications.
The main thing you have to get down is how to pitch story ideas in a query letter. Take a day at B&N or Borders and sift through all the books on freelance writing and how to write a query letter as possible. You can also check out the Writer’s Market, which lists all the different publications you can write for, what they pay and what types of stories they typically publish.
