in your experiences, have you guys usually found that its more productive for you to do one full time internship and dedicate all your efforts to that, or to do two part internships ..3 days and 2 days… 2 days just seems like such a short amt of time to get to work on any big projects.
thanks guys!

The two titles I worked in office for were owned by the same publishing company so it felt like one big internship. It really depends on what you’ll be doing. Ask for a description of the internship program because if the full time sounds like its really hands on and the part time is clerical then you know what to pick but if the part time internships are more intensive then go for the two. Also, take into account the popularity of the title and size of the magazine. If the two part time internships are at big names then theres a chance no one will remember you if you’re there for two days and only making photocopies.
With today’s industry I’m tempted to go for two internships instead of one full time internship to fill up my resume but after speaking with editors about what makes a good intern I know I have to weigh the pros and cons before jumping into anything for face value.
good luck!

TAKE BOTH!
As someone looking for a job, here’s my advice: if you can handle two internships, then do it. The only job interviews I’ve had are b/c the people I’ve worked with in internships before have recommended me. Getting as many contacts as you possibly can IS SOOO IMPORTANT! They’re the ones who will recommend you, tell you about openings, and give you good, solid advice. HR is a joke most of the time, unless you’ve interned with their company before. And most interns know there’s a lot of down time, esp. in the summer, so they probably won’t need you more than 2-3 days anyway.
mhckate..
I could use advice as well..I’m contemplating taking on a second internship this summer to do the two days I won’t be at my first internship, but sort of agree that I shouldn’t just go it for the sake of doing it. It’s not my dream internship or anything like that, but I just feel like I shouldn’t pass up a good opportunity, chance to double contacts, double my experience, etc. This would be my 4th and 5th internship and I still have a year left of college to go, so maybe I should opt out?
what do you get out of each of them?
I think the other thing to consider is what you’ll get at each internship specifically. Don’t have two just for the sake of having another internship/working 5 days a week. It won’t say on your resume how many days you worked there. But if there is something complementary about the internships that might help fill a hole in your resume, then it can certainly be worth it. The summer I had two internships, I was working 3 days at a small lifestyle pub for a mentor that I really connected with and where I got a ton of clips, and 2 days at a big Hearst magazine where I did less and didn’t make as much of an impact, but helped establish my relationship with the company. There are reasons for and against, but as long as you have other previous internships and others to come, I wouldn’t stress about it if you don’t want two and have no reason to do it.
It depends
It depends. Are you from the NY area? Are you able to intern during the school year? Is this going to be your first internship? I think that if you have limited opportunities to intern (like if you can only do it during the summer), then it might be good for you to take on both; double your contacts and your experience. I’ve had internships that were 2 days a week and I still got to work on big projects and do substantial work.
1 internship
i personally think 1 internship at a time is best for a few reasons: you can focus your attention, you will be given more exciting projects and you will get to know the editors you are working for better and hopefully they will keep their eyes open for jobs when you graduate.
having said that, i also don’t think interns should work full-time. 3-4 days per week is a perfect balance and usually you can work something out like this with the hiring editor.
for ilovemags, since u
for ilovemags, since u already have so many internships, unless the 2nd one is somewhere you’d enjoy, or really get useful contacts, maybe you shouldnt bother overloading, and just focus on the one you already have
