Why do job boards lie?

I’ve suspected for a while that most job postings on Media Bistro and the other big boards are total BS. But now I have proof. Last week there was a posting on Media Bistro for an EA position at a major mag. I applied the SAME day the job was posted and the ME emailed me back saying “We’re not actually hiring, but I’ll keep your resume on file.”

Can anyone explain why this happens?

It's a strategy

This is a common strategy used by recruiters. They post a “job listing” and ask for applicants. What’s really going on is they are filing away resumes so if that company ever asks for someone to fill that position, they have a pool of resumes ready. It’s not fair to job seekers.

Only around 7% of job seekers obtain a job through internet searches only. You have to be more aggressive. Utilize contacts, email HR or the editor directly and ask for an informational interview. Job seekers who use these techniques find jobs 42% - 69% this way.

All the best.
