INTERVIEW IN PERSON/PHONE?

I have an informational interview scheduled with Conde Nast soon and hope to secure one with Hearst and Rodale (any help,I would really appreciate it!). My resume is substantial with brand name companies and I also have published magazine experience from a reputable magazine.

I will graduate in May.

I am worried however because I am out of state. Of course, there is no possible way to/ or would maybe even possibly dare to ask HR if they can schedule all my interviews on one date (if that is even possible to begin with). So then that leaves me with phone interview options, which I feel will result in me having a lesser chance of being hired.

Is my best option to just suck it up and just pay (or in other words charge, as a college student) for plane tickets to New York from LA if I acquire interviews (hopefully, interview(s)?

I’m ambitious enough to do whatever it takes to get my dream job, so if I should, I will.

So I guess my question comes to, “Do phone interviews give you less of a chance of being hired?”

If not, possibly any pointers for the future, if I do a phone interview with Conde/Hearst/Rodale?

Thanks in advance!

I dont think so

I don’t think phone interviews will affect your chances. Many editors are understanding and arent going to expect you to fly from LA to interview often, especially knowing you are a college student. I don’t think it’d hurt to ask if they’d be willing to do an interview over the phone..if they say no, move on, but if they say yes be flattered because it means that they are interested enough and impressed enough with you to give you a shot.

Just make sure your enthusiasm and personality shine through over the phone and your chances will be just as good as the next person’s! =)

For fashion or beauty yes,

For fashion or beauty yes, editorial not so much. You can schedule all your interviews on one day. Just say you will be in NYC on X date and you would love to stop by for an interview. I’ve been able to sched three interviews for the same day. just make sure you space it out well so you’re not late!

Just tread the waters, ask if you can do a phoner but say an in person can be arranged for the specific date you want and if they sound uneasy about the phone interview do the in person. I had an editorial editor at a fashion mag who wanted me to come in so I could check out the offices, closet and what type of work I’d be doing.

Good luck, sounds like you’re going to end up somewhere really good.
