Hi,
Does anyone have any experience or info on freelance writing for the big glossies? Since I don’t plan on moving to NY anytime soon, this seems to be my only option. I live in Atlanta and I have written for local publications, but now I’m ready to take it to the next level. Last year I pitched Fitness and another mag, but they weren’t accepted, so I kinda gave up on it… I know that was lame, that’s why I’m at it again. Also, is anyone a subscriber on Mediabistro.com? Any help would be great. Thanks.
freelancing in the US is hard
Hello, I was born and raised in manhattan and i go to college in manhattan. I actually freelanced for a lot of underground publications (that covered punk rock and stuff) and then I got to freelance a little for some magazines in london and japan. The biggest problem is that no major US magazine wanted to publish me! I would say go international. Freelancing was also my best bet at the time because I was like 15, 16 when I was writing record reviews / concert reviews for magazines in UK. Right now, I’m a little older and looking to get back into it. I pray i can land a magazine internship at hearst or conde nast. I wouldn’t care if it was bon appetit. lol.
anyway id say try foreign publications.
Persistence is key
Freelance writing is not an easy career. I’m also trying to get into it and I suggest pitching front of book articles for the big magazines, if you’re trying to get in. Also, mediabistro is a great subscription to have because of the “How To Pitch” section—it breaks down a lot of magazines. I’m taking a mediabistro course on freelance writing right now and it’s taught me a lot. I would suggest taking an online class, since you’re in Atlanta.
