Web sites

Hey all,

Has anyone transitioned from print to magazine-based Web sites? Is it a difficult process? Are there any specific programs candidates are required to know, a.k.a. what might make a “print” experience person stand out in the application process for a Web site?

I’m an assistant editor in “real world” print (internships previously), but am considering moving to the online.

Thanks!

i agree with the above

i agree with the above comment, the internet is with a doubt growing into the most important medium of communication across the globe and its due to sites like this that ideas are spreading so quickly.

While I haven’t taken any

While I haven’t taken any of them, MediaBistro’s On Demand Video courses are inexpensive, and the topics they cover would be a good starting point for someone transitioning from print to Web. They have a video series on writing for the Web, which is a pretty important topic if you’re hoping to make the jump.

I haven’t taken any of these courses, but have attended some of their panel discussions in LA, which were held in partnership with Yahoo, so I think they’ll probably have something to offer.

Thanks for the tips! Are

Thanks for the tips! Are there any sites you would particularly recommend for learning about such things?

=)

Most mags have their own

Most mags have their own Content Management Systems that they’ll train you in, so being a fast learner and being able to pick up on new programs is key. Photoshop is a plus, along with any other photo editing programs.

You’ll have to have a strong familiarity with the Web, so, as another thread (I think) said, arm yourself with a list of sites you like or frequent.

For most other stuff, several websites offer quick online tutorials or longer classes for search engine basics and stuff like that, which would be helpful in addition to your print experience.

Oh, and basic HTML might be a plus, but I’ve learned most of what I have to use by picking up a pocket reference at a bookstore.

Hope that helps!
