I love teen mags and have kind of always wanted to work for one. I’ve had a few internships and think I would be pretty qualified for one a teen mag this summer, but I’ve heard that this is not always the best genre for people who have already had some internship experience, since many interns are just learning the ropes.
There are other mags that I’d also love to work for, so for my last undergraduate internship, should I go for something else?
Has anyone worked at a teen mag (Seventeen, CosmoGIRL, Teen Vogue…)? Can you shed some light on this subject?
in my experience...
Teen mags will give you MORE practical experience than other mags. Since you’re closer to their demographic than any of the editors, they really rely on their interns.
National teen mags like Seventeen, CosmoGIRL, and Teen Vogue usually require that their interns have previous experience… so I don’t know where you’re getting the idea that it’s for newbies.
But if you think you’re above it, go elsewhere. It’ll show very quickly.
I don’t know… I feel
I don’t know… I feel like if you want to work for a teen magazine eventually, then maybe you should intern for them. It might not be a hard workload, but I feel like you should be willing to put up with the grunt work for good connections. This is solely based on what I think though, so it may not be the soundest advice.
If you intern at CosmoGIRL! though, I think the best internship would be with Ed prez, Chandra Czape Turner.
Frankly, a good internship
Frankly, a good internship at The New York Times or even a small publishing house will do you, your sanity and your career some good.
