I’m in need of advice, so here’s the scenario. I’m a post-grad intern, who recently moved to NYC, and within two weeks of moving here, I accepted a part-time, paid (minimal pay) internship with a trade publication. I was just offered an unpaid internship with a national fashion magazine. This national magazine internship is the “foot-in-the-door” that I have hoped for.
These two internships combined would be Monday-Friday, leaving me the weekends and nights to work a part-time job in order to pay my bills. I’ve been trying and trying to get a part-time job, but these hours don’t work for any employer. This is my frustrating situation.
Also, I feel confused by some of the conflicting advice given on Ed2010. When I first made the decision to move to NYC, I thought that I needed NYC-based internships to get ahead here (that is what I gathered from Ed2010). Then the other day I read that post-grads had no business interning. I feel like I have made a mistake taking this internship (I have not taken the national fashion mag. yet). I thought I hit the gold mine when someone offered me, a post-grad, a paid internship. Plus, this other internship, the one at a national fashion magazine, sounds too exciting to pass up.
Should I drop the internships and try for a full-time position even if they are at lesser known magazines, publications or websites? Will I burn bridges if I drop internships? Any full-time position sounds appealing at this point. I’m starving. Please help! I know I sound pathetic, but I need mentors. Thanks!

I’ve been wondering the same thing in terms of— What if you have the post-grad and undergrad experience, but really zero connections? For example, working at one of the small, lesser known publications has afforded you experience— but no networking for future jobs. Would it be wise to try an intern at a larger company (giving up the full-time to work part-time), if the smaller job becomes a “dead end?”
Yup, I’d take the bigger
Yup, I’d take the bigger mag and replace the low-paying one with some kind of waitressing/waitering or retail job which probably pays a lot more and will give you hours (and if you’re a waitress…discounted/free food!).
Compromise
Hi Jill,
I’m also less than a year out of school and find myself in a similar situation. From everything I’ve learned and been told, those internships are your way in, especially if you don’t have such experience from during school or the summers. But you also have to eat. What about dropping your pay internship to find a better-paying job for the weekday and weekend hour you would then have, while also working the unpaid internship at the bigger mag?
Though some people may say you shouldn’t intern once you’re out of school, what I think they mean is that you should take the best position you’re qualified for, and they might be assuming you’ve already interned previously. But if what you really need to do is build your resume, the internship at the fashion mag is something you can’t pass up. If it’s well-known, like you said, it may be enough to get you a paid position or internship once it’s over, and you’ll have made as much money as you can in the mean time. Best of luck.
Matt
I agree
After I graduated, I did two internships (one paid and one unpaid) and my internship at the unpaid internship really helped pump up my resume and get my foor in the door. If you have been at the paid internship for a while, it might be time to leave and pursue a bigger opportunity. Besides, it’s only minimum wage and you can get more than that at a part-time job somewhere. I have heard some people say post-grads shouldn’t intern but that only applies if you already have the experience. Also, getting an internship at some of the bigger pubs after you graduate is hard because most require getting college credit, so if you managed to secure one, don’t pass up the opportunity!
Thanks!
This is the I advice needed. Thanks to everyone! I think I’m going to drop the paid internship and go for the big name magazine internship. I’ve been at the paid internship for two weeks. Is that too early to quit? I feel like the paid internship is a dead end.
